What CAA's Kevin Huvane Is Doing To Risk Losing His Many Actress Clients

I'm told CAA partner Kevin Huvane is throwing a belated birthday party on Saturday night for recently released from prison Joe Francis, the scandalous founder of Mantra Films Inc, which produces those disgusting Girls Gone Wild soft-porn video and DVD series caa.bmpwhich have prompted so many complaints that women and even underage girls were filmed without their permission. UPDATE: *In addition I'm told Huvane along with his posse of friends use Francis's Mexico vacation compound in Punta Mita almost every Xmas and New Years as well as Easter. When Huvane's not having his own parties he parks his very special clients there. So some see the birthday party as a payback.*

I've confirmed that Francis is not a CAA client. But it's not only Francis's professional behavior that's controversial, but also his personal behavior. You may remember this article from the August 6, 2006 issue of the Sunday magazine of the Los Angeles Times by Claire Hoffman in which she described an incident in which Francis "humiliated" her by pinning her to the hood of a car and twisting her arms hard behind her back (so hard she feared he'd break them) while he pushed himself against her and shouted -- apparently demonstrating his 2003 arrest in Florida. Hoffman claimed that "the pressure he applied was so intense that hours later, my arms were covered in red hand marks."

There also have been many accusations leveled against Francis by women and even underage girls alleging he sexually exploited and abused them and even worse. And then there are the charges of tax evasion, business fraud, drug trafficking, and on and on. Given all this, it can only be deemed surprising that Huvane, because he is prominent in a talent industry where perception is everything, would have anything to do with this guy, much less throw him a birthday bash. Not only does Huvane represent some of the top actresses in Hollywood, including Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Renee Zellweger, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, but many of these women are feminists to one degree or another. Kidman, in fact, is the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women and just this week spoke out in favor of UNIFEM's "Say NO To Violence Against Women" campaign to raise public awareness for the subject.

I alerted CAA today that I was writing about this, and the agency did not deny or explain Huvane's involvement with Francis. Huvane had no comment. Instead, a source at the agency thought it was "weird" this would be a story for me.

  1. Good for you for reporting on this Nikki. I think by “weird” CAA meant “embarrassing”.

  3. Same old story. We like to think we’re enlightened, sophisticated, free of bias, etc. etc. in this country, but when it comes to treating women with the respect they deserve (I mean, where the hell would any of us be without women–I know I’m incapable of giving birth), we’re about three steps out of the cave.

The women in Joe Francis’ videos could be our sisters or daughters or the future brides of our sons…Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that no one forced them in to appearing in those videos, unless, of course, you don’t believe alcohol or “date” drugs or poor self esteem (brought on by the onslaught of man’s incredibly idiotic ability to demean women and treat them as second class citizens–witness this year’s democratic process as a prime example–every chance they get) counts as a “choice.”

It’s a sad statement on Hollywood that a powerful agent like Kevin Huvane would dishonor his actor clients (and females in general) by celebrating a slime like Joe Francis with a public birthday party.

It makes me ashamed to be a man.

  4. Good for you. I wish everyone of his women clients would up and leave the agency. How can the women agents tolerate it.

  5. Why should any actress care if Huvane hangs out with a guy who demeans women? Most actresses in Hollywood demean themselves already by dating “bad boys” and losers, or sleeping with powerful men to advance their careers.

Hang out at the Ivy or the Urth Cafe and see how many actresses are wasting their times with sleazebags, either out of a love for “danger” or shameless ambition. The men these actresses throw themselves at make Joe Francis look like a gentleman.

Joe is just the new version of Don Simpson, a crude man who unapologetically shows how far women are willing to go to get attention and feel sexy.

Female narcissism is the fuel that keeps the Hollywood engine running.

  6. Wow.

You mean Hollywood is catering to a multi-millionaire who made his fortune through the porn industry?! How utterly unshocking.

I wonder if Nikke has ever heard The People vs. Larry Flynt?

Porn is sooo bad and it must be stopped. Maybe Nikke should hook up with Pat Robertson…

    Comment by Chris — April 25, 2008 @ 6:03 pm

  7. It does seem pretty bizarre for an agency to do that for someone like Francis, unless it was going to bring in more money than the loss of clients would take out.

Of course CAA could be banking on their “A-list” female stars putting CAA’s ability to get them money above their box-office appeal above feminism, or basic decency.

Maybe their trying to arrange for him to be Wesley Snipes’ cell mate?

    Comment by Furious D — April 25, 2008 @ 6:03 pm

  8. Nikki, you are a goddess and a role model.

Thank you for speaking out against crap like this. Why do so few women speak out against this? With no role models, and the power of media, and the controlling of media by men, girls imitate what they see in the media.

Women are so freaking worried if they speak out, have opinions, demand respect, they will be vilified as unattractive. That is the first place men go to suppress female power - attack their appearance. Women need to thumb their nose at this, and take their rightful equal position as 50%+ of the population.

Let’s see if any of these actresses will speak up. They are usually a big bunch of phonies with an “I got mine” attitude. Where were they during that pathetic Warner Bros./Robinov ban on female leads? Or on the general dearth of female roles? The shelving of Wonder Woman?

If someone made their living as a racist, no way CAA would celebrate them. Making a living as a sexist is no more acceptable. Shame on every woman who thinks it’s no big deal, and is stupid enough to think crap like Francis dumps on the world empowers women.

YOU ROCK, NIKKI. THIS MOST CERTAINLY IS A STORY, AND A PATHETIC ONE.

And doesn’t CAA wish to be seen as the “Tiffany” agency? Why would they squander their cache on a slime bag like Francis?

CAA is looking creepier and creepier.

  9. Perception?? In Hollywood?? Are you kidding? As long as actresses like Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman are very public friends with (and CAA reps) George Clooney, who never met a stripper (Sarah Talley), lap dancer, porn star (Krista Allen), go go dancer, N9NE girl (Sarah Larson), or other “girl-on-sale” he didn’t flaunt publicly, they should have nothing to say to Joe Francis or Kevin Huvane. End of story where they are concerned.

The real issue here is whether moviegoers who would shun a movie connected to a publicly avowed racist or antisemite will begin to apply equivalent standards on behalf of respect for women to movies featuring actors, producers, writers, or directors who are closely associated with activites that involve the exploitation of or violence against women. I think that this will begin to happen.

  10. You know, have some freakin’ sympathy, Nikki. Joe Francis just spent months going through his own little “Midnight Express” prison nightmare and before that, he endured that extortion plot with the leaking of the video that showed his getting molested in the rectal cavity with a pink dildo.

His emergence from this psychological trauma is no doubt a Horatio Alger story worthy of praise and genuflection.

So Nikki, as penance for your ad hominem attack, do the honorable thing and approach Joe about doing a Bloggers Gone Wild DVD. We’d like to see you Ana Marie Cox, Julia Allison, Michelle Malkin…

Oh, God, I just lumped you in with those insufferable shrews. Sorry, Nikki, sorry, I love you. Forgive me. ;)

Now, I’m in no way trying to defend this Joe Francis guy or Huvane (and no, I don’t own, nor have I even seen any of the GGW videos), but c’mon, this just has cheap shot written all over it. It comes off as a desperate attempt to slander someone.

What you seem to despise Francis for doing (exploiting others’ questionable behavior) is exactly what you are doing to Kevin Huvane, Nikki. If you think these drunk girls ought to be able to parade around topless without being exposed, then don’t expose Kevin Huvane for what he’s done.

  12. As someone who has “worked” with Joe in the past, I can verify that this is true and also “par for the course” in Hollywood.

wannabe IA is right - only when ALL women stand up for themselves and call out sexism for the nasty, nasty thing that it truly is, will they come anywhere close to getting equality. racism is no longer tolerated. anti-semitism is no longer tolerated but sexism is celebrated here in hollywood.

  15. I’m surprised Huvane has so many otherwise intelligent female stars as clients considering he’s effectively destroyed the careers of most of them by preying on those edging toward 40 and pushing them into every piece of shit movie that comes along just so he can line his own coffers while the actresses in question lose their reputations. I thought Bullock dumped this guy a couple of years ago?

  16. Who cares?

Have you ever seen Girls Gone Wild? They’re really entertaining videos, a lot more entertaining than Nicole Kidman’s last five films, and definately more profitable.

No matter who your agent is in Hollywood it is almost guaranteed that they have at least one friend who is a complete a-hole and probably a sexiest or racist.

Should we also stop using lawyers who have represented criminals?

Have you heard hip-hop radio? Seen “Hangin’ with the Kardashians?” How about Paris Hilton, Jenna Jameson, Pamela Anderson, the Girls Next Door, Tila Tequila, Rock of Love, Heidi Montag, et al? That’s not even to mention the A-list “actresses” (the Jessicas, Megan Fox, pre-sainthood Angelina Jolie etc.) who work out more than they read. They know we value their bodies most of all. Oh, and their lips.

I doubt Kevin Huvane even gave this party a second thought — but thanks, Nikki, for getting up in his grill…

Sexual politics matter not, here. Fact is that Joe Francis is simply a louse. He’s been lucky to skate through a few charges, while getting pinched on others. Drug charges, contempt-of-court, child abuse, alleged tax evasion…

CAA should know, lie with dogs, you’re gonna get fleas…

  30. Morality in Hollywood? Forget it. You’re in very nebulous territory here.

Huvane isn’t risking anything with this move. Francis is a client who makes him and the agency a lot of money. Favors like this are done for important clients all the time…that’s their argument, right or wrong. What about Roman Polanski’s agency? I’m pretty sure it’s one of the big 5…where’s the Hollywood feminist outrage over that? There isn’t any, what a shock.

Newsflash…men have been objectifying women since the beginning of time, it’s how we think and wont change unless you change the hardwiring. Men like sex and are turned on by nubile young women, always have, always will be. Huvane probably watches the videos too. If you don’t believe it, you’re delusional.

It’s a shame girls are exploited without their proper consent, but I can’t fault Huvane for trying to keep a client happy. He’s a businessman.

  32. Wannabe Industry Analyst -

A quick perusal of Krista Allen’s credits shows no actual porn. She has done one Emmanuelle film and some Emmanuelle television shows, but that’s not hard-core. Typically, when you refer to “porn” without the modifying adjectives “soft” or “soft-core”, people assume you’re referring to “hard-core” pornography, which is not the case with Ms. Allen.

If you had watched Unscripted on HBO about three years back now, you would have seen a storyline involving her character - she plays a version of herself - having trouble with being taken seriously as an actress after an Emmanuelle past. Oh, and she was damn good in the show.

A lot of actresses - and with the increasing use of full-frontal male nudity for humor/shock value in comedies, an increasing number of actors - have stripped for the camera, some in higher-pedigree projects than others. Helen Mirren appeared naked in “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, Her Lover”. Would you characterize Helen Mirren as having done porn???

So, huvane should only rep people the women approve of? getdafuckouttahere. last time I checked, francis wasn’t a murderer or a child molester. If he was, I’d see your problem. I’d have the same problem, but, he isn’t. I love the arrogance you, nikki,(and, frankly, a lot of women in hollywood)display here. who are you to, in essence, try to get his female clients to drop him because you disapprove of joe francis? what effect does his repping of francis have on anyone else he reps? no effect. yet, you want to jam this guy because you don’t like joe…it’s a BIRTHDAY PARTY, for fuck’s sake. If this agent endorses — feels fine with — GGW’s degrading, cruel, vapid, shallow depictions of women, I’d suggest his female clients worry about his capacity to find them interesting, complex roles. How many good scripts is he tossing aside because he doesn’t relate to or care about strong, interesting women? Anyone who associates with Joe Francis has to hate — or at least disrespect — women at some level.

That means you make your living the same way Joe Francis does. But even Joe isn’t in the ‘escort’ (prostitution) business. You are.

As far as Kevin Huvane is concerned, you reported it yourself above, he doesn’t even represent Joe. But you’re suggesting CAA’s famale clients should leave the agency because Kevin threw a party for Joe? Because they KNOW each other…?

    Of COURSE CAA’s flack thinks it’s ‘weird’ you’re reporting this. It’s a non-story.

But Joe Francis abuses women. He dislikes them and he wants to hurt them. His entire business model is about taking advantage of really young, really drunk girls. Yeah, I find that creepy. Yeah, I find it creepy that Huvane is apparently pally with the guy.

  53. I think what is most objectionable is not so much the fact that a person like Joe Francis exploits women. If he doesn’t, trust me, there will be some other man that does. In this puritanical society, it’s no frickin’ wonder how greatly divided people are on these issues. On one side you have the ultra-conservatism, on the other side you have the lewdest and lowest of pond scum pushing this crap on LITTLE GIRLS. And those little girls grow up thinking this is what they have to do in order to be considered and feel sexy.

But the most objectionable thing is the sheer two-facedness of people like Kevin Huvane, who bask in the glory of some of the most powerful women in Hollywood, then turn around and glorify some cheap and uneducated a-hole of a porn producer. Why does he feel the need to get involved with this garbage? Is he not indirectly insulting the same powerful women in Hollywood who for the most part fought against having to stoop so low for their own careers???

Someone mentioned Clooney. George spent years and years trying to be taken more seriously and do public good deeds in order to be more respected and liked. But then he courts strippers and escorts and rumor has it, prostitutes, and enables them in degrading themselves. Just because it’s for sale doesn’t mean these men have to buy it. Don’t they have women in their own lives to answer to: mothers, sisters, daughters, cousins? So why should anyone be asking people like Nikki to turn a blind eye to all this just because a few testosterone-driven 10 percenters like the idea of grouping themselves with the turdiest people in society? The more society turns a blind eye to what’s considered acceptable vs. unacceptable, the more women as a whole become degraded in this society. It’s no flippin’ wonder we haven’t seen a female president in the history of the U.S. Look how we’re being portrayed: Paris Hilton’s, Ashley Dupre’s, HEather Mills, Kim Kardashian. These are ROLE MODELS in Hollywood? Please.

I think Nicole and Julia and all the others should band together and say syonara. It sure would prove to some douche like Huvane that he only gets 10 percent because women like Julia and Nicole did 90 per cent of the work. Kick this leech off their sides and find someone worthy of collecting his ten per cent. That would just show him WHO has the power. If they don’t, then they’ve essentially agreed that he has the power over them.

I’d so love to see a few strong women stick to their guns and stand up to this kind of b.s.

  54. As a female client of CAA, I will certainly let my agents know my feelings. However as a LITERARY client of CAA, I doubt anyone will give a shit.
I only hope he’s not using any official CAA money for this bash. That would truly anger me.
His close friendship with Francis is a surprise… I had always been under the impression that Kevin was gay.

  55. I want you to know that this story and the comments attached to it are patently ridiculous, completely preposterous and utterly absurd. Not only have the reputation of many wonderful CAA agents been tarnished, but my afternoon, and the afternoons of many important CAA clients, have been ruined. I demand somebody be fired. I don’t care who it is, but this can’t go unpunished. How about the waiter at the Ivy? Or the busboy at Trendy’s? Or a typesetter at the Weekly? I’m trying to be reasonable here! A couple of nobodies. That’s a fair price for the injury to One of the Most Important People In Hollywood, someone with whome I am proud to be on a first-name basis, Kevin. I demand not one but two, TWO people be fired. Perhaps the courier who failed to put my weekend read in the proper place under the doberman’s dish. Also, I want to know the real name of the poster who calls herself “girlsgoneangry” as well as her landlord’s phone number. I think a few months on the streets should remind her you don’t really have free speech in Hollywood.

  56. Kevin’s known Joe Francis for many years. Many years before he became Girls Gone Wild Joe. He’s a loyal friend and he’s getting punished for that?
