With Jackson out as director, Guillermo del Toro would be an excellent choice. Still, Sam Raimi’s name being mentioned is a good thing, so maybe he’ll do it.

JAMES MCAVOY should play Bilbo Baggins.

* He’s pint sized
* He’s cute
* He’s capable of bringing the emotional vulnerability necessary to pull us along on the tale and hold down the emotional core amidst the CGI (what made LOTR work)
* He’s OK with hairy prosthetics and working in New Zealand

SET UP A MEETING ALREADY! CAN SOMEONE START A CAMPAIGN!

The only proposals I've heard of for two movies are: The Hobbit, part one and part two or The Hobbit and an unstated story set much earlier. In the latter case, the unstated earlier story might be a selection from The Silmarillion or an adaptation of Children of Hurin. In other words, it would be either a two-part The Hobbit or The Hobbit and a pre-pre-pre-prequel.

The Hobbit is not being divided into two parts. They are doing The Hobbit, and then what happened between The Hobbit and LOTR.

Which is indefinitely more idiotic, considering there is a reason Tolkien didn’t write a story taking place in those 60 years, because they’re isn’t one. Not that comes together and forms a functional storyline one can turn into a film, at any rate.

Count on the Hollywood shit-factory to screw things up. Of course Shaye and Jackson are doing The Hobbit with the stacks of cash staring back at them on the table. I’m sure Jackson’s input will be invaluable on the Hobbit but Spielberg can handle Tintin by himself — Jackson should helm the Hobbit — just as a round peg fits into the round hole.

Also, dividing the Hobbit into two parts is pure greed.

What are you going to call it? Hobbit I and Hobbit II? That’s a joke. It’s one story; it should be one movie. Name one LOTR fan that thought the trilogy couldn’t be trimmed down a bit/or significantly and improved.

So is this site turning into a strictly Strike Only site? Every story doesn’t have to be commented on by angry writers…probably should have left the comments off on this one.
For me, I’m just happy this is resolved and we’ll be finally getting the Hobbit before Sir Ian is unavailable for the role of Gandalf.

This is great news!

As for whether they have a script ready or not, I think the that pre-production - designing any sets/costumes/etc for things that didn’t appear in the LOTR - can probably proceed with just a copy of Tolkien’s book to guide the crew.

This is FANTASTIC news and the best Christmas present a Tolkien nerd like me could imagine (other than the strike ending, etc.). New Line has had plenty of problems — though I genuinely liked THE GOLDEN COMPASS — but with Jackson producing, this is likely to be amazing.

Wow. They’re going to chop “The Hobbit” into 2 parts? They’re really going to milk that one, too, huh? A shame. I was hoping they could do it as 1-part LONG movie, where we have to take an intermission - like they used to - but I guess there’s no money in that, eh?
No, I guess I can’t imagine Lawrence of Arabia being shown in 2 parts, no, not these days when the money is too good at the box office.

I think every Writer would like to see the books of every Studio to see how much money the Studios have stolen from us.

For the last 20 years.

I would like to see a Jury in the State of California see how much money the Studios have stolen from us.
