Bewkes sent out misinformation from start because there was obviously no real consideration as to whether this is truly cost-effective and an apparent lack of information of what was involved. Newliners were blindsided and questions answered with a lot of "don't know" and "not sure". Most of 600 New Line employees are losing jobs. Distribution, marketing, operations already rolled into Warner Bros. and that announcement made public (while distributors and exhibitors were at ShoWest in Las Vegas) without notification first to New Line or Warner Bros people. "Colleagues whose jobs are eliminated will be treated fairly and respectfully" -- if you buy that, there's a bridge in London that may be for sale again.

I worked for NL for XII years before being laid off but not before having survived two previous layoffs (the 3rd time was NOT the charm), and while I had a good time & worked my ass off, the company did produce a "few" good films. I certainly feel for my soon-to-be fallen comrades but if anything, those who should be tossed are those in Development including Toby Emmerich along with Bob & Michael, as they are, ultimately, the ones who greenlit so many shitawful films and wound up costing, causing and subsequently flushing this proverbial legacy down the toilet.

I like how this "ballsy" move doesn't do anything about the AOL purchase debacle (which is exactly when WB forced Michael DeLuca out of New Line and Bob Shaye installed that I-can't-believe-he'll-still-be-in-power buffoon Toby Emmerich) which is the real reason Time-Warner is having stock problems. Why is AOL such an anchor? Because no one wants to buy it. Gutting New Line, on the other hand, is a largely symbolic gesture-- though there's nothing symbolic about hundreds of jobs being lost and another potential buyer pushed out of the marketplace.

PS - I love how Nikki spews venom at the "moguls" throughout the strike and then kisses Bewkes' ass throughout this whole story. We get it, lady-- you don't like Bob Shaye.

Well for Hobbit fans this IS good news. With New Line gone, negotiations for settlement can continue in good faith and without past feelings cutting into the chance of success. Look for a settlement for the Tolkien Trust much sooner now than if Shaye were still in the drivers seat.

That means "The Hobbit" starts it's journey much sooner as well. In 3-D of course - a story I broke months ago.

Check out MarketSaw.com for more details and the best list of 3D movies on the 'net. That's all I do. 3D.

How is this "ballsy" and how will it move the stock?
New Line has about 1/2 of 1% of TimeWarner employees.
New Line makes about 2% of TimeWarner revenue.

I can't believe people are saying "that sucks." Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne were a couple of criminal buffoons. Maybe now that they're out of the picture, no longer attempting to screw over the writers, directors, and copyright holders who made them their money, The Hobbit will actually get made. I imagine Warner Brothers management actually understands the concept of PAYING the people to whom you owe money.

From "Reefer Madness" to Freddie Krueger to Frodo. By any measure, Bob Shaye has had a great run. And the niche he found - and abandoned, I guess - is still wide open. That is, cheap, fun genre pics created for the youth market.

Shaye and Lynne's recent appearance on Charlie Rose is worth looking up.

"Ballsy move," eh? Well, it looks like Bewkes is sacking most of the place and still keeping Toby Emmerich as president of production. That's not ballsy-- that's short-sighted in terms of the company's real potential and, in the case of Toby, utterly and completely retarded. That means good execs are going to be fired or flee and Warner Bros. is going to be stuck with a half-assed company that's going to make Dimension look classy.

Yes, but look at the bright side.

The more power Jeff Robinov gets, the more opportunities he'll have to show us what a complete creative moron he is, and the sooner this town will be rid of him when they dethrone him. I give him four years.

The person who left the second comment saying that this will have little impact is a moron and clearly does not understand that New Line ran separately from Warners. New Line will definitely NOT "operate as it always has." Read the memos...it's pretty clear most New Liners will be goners. Sucks for the industry as a whole...the consolidation continues.

Not good news. No matter how they say it, six months from now, there will be a complete integration, and ONE LESS BUYER out there.

Too bad.
