Nichelle,
That is a great point..reminds me of something my grandma used to say. "The fish starts stinking at the head first" I smell something fishy at Variety.

No Wonder Reed Wants to Jettison Variety They are a liability in terms of complete lack of knowledge of proper email Marketing, user privacy and basic CAN-Spam requirements. It will be a short time before someone sues! Please view my post on Variety's new social Networking site, The Biz, and how they "accidentally" leaked out the personal data and contact info to countless hollywood Big-wigs and celebs!I would dump their group to! http://sensiblemarketing.wordpress.com/2008/02/18/email-gone-sour/

Why would anyone want to buy VARIETY in this market? Reed's stock JUMPED on the news because it's increasingly impossible to make money on such a clubby, "one hand washes the other" business model now that everybody is wired and gets their news online rather than stuffed in the mailbox. I hope they're all quaking in their boots over there, and that a new broom sweeps very clean...

Yes, some elements of Variety have gotten worse over time. That said, lets not go nuts over the Silverman years. Bart did a lot of good early on in reenergizing the place. The TV staff of the 1990s was great. Two of them went on to The Wall Street Journal, another to the LA Times, another to TV Guide. Film coverage weas good too, Anita Busch, Beth Laski, etc. There was a time when Variety was Triple-A ball in journalism--and I mean that in a good way. Now, not so sure.

I just KNEW this would happen once Army Archerd hung it up! Damn it! Now all we have for the familial insider jabs comes from some brainless Cuban twit named Mario-something-andiera?? Uggh. I'd settle for Bill Dakota over THAT swish! Thank GOD Nikki seems safe here in her world. I was RAISED on Peter's BACKLOT, and the breaking stories of Michael Fleming and I burned through "Just For Variety" each day when my copy arrived all the way from Hollywoodland while I was in film school in the early 90s. What hell doth the future hold for us? Anybody wanna meet me at Trader Vic's for cocktails before our usual Friday night at the Coconut Club just let me - oh, wait. Where'd it go??

I'm going to buy Variety and put Peter Bart out to pasture where he belongs. He's old and out of touch. He's been there way too long. Don't let the door hit you on the way out Peter. ;)

Variety has taken hits in the last year but I have to say, Peter Bart has written some really thoughtful stuff in his column over the last few months.

How often do stars buys ads? Writers buy ads? (Ever?)

The strike kicked Variety's ass. I resubscribed, but Nikki's coverage of the strike was better.

Can a studio buy an ad here? :-)

Guys, this isn't just a matter of a potential buyer saying, "Oh, cool! I want to own Variety!" Reed Business information is a multi-billion dollar company that employs close to 10,000 people. Variety is only one part of a huge publishing and business-to-business corporation.

Let me second Tom's statement. Whomever buys Variety needs to go back into the archives, see what Variety was doing in the 70s and 80s and bring THAT paper back. That is the Variety I fell for as a child, and that's the Variety I want as an adult.
