Primetime Pilot Panic: CBS Official Renewals; UPDATE: 'Moonlight' Cancelled; 'Shark' Kaput, Too

cbslogosmaller.JPG

UPDATE: CBS has officially let veteran Moonlight know that it's been cancelled. The network even nixed any remote chance of a mid-season back 13-episode order. See my previous about the renewal saga, 'Moonlight' Not On CBS Fall Schedule But Not Dead; Show Lobbying For Back 13-Episode Order. CBS also axed Shark, a show that deteriorated faster than a CSI corpse left out in the sun...

I'm told CBS today has officially let these veteran shows know they're renewed: Old Christine (WBT), Rules of Engagement (Sony/CBS Paramount), How I Met Your Mother (20th Century Fox TV), The Unit (20th Century Fox TV)

  10. moonlight is just one in a line of many recent shows that develop smaller than average but very loyal audiences (jericho, firefly, friday night lights to name a few) surely these networks have to figure a way to make money from these shows

in the case of moonlight, NBC should look into it it they don’t have much going on and could slot it in maybe with medium and i’m sure it isn’t too expensive

  11. I’m speechless. I’m already depressed; now I’m beyond depressed. I guess cbs really doesn’t care about viewers it’s about freakin ratings………even though we were no.1 in the Fri night spot………Thanks for nothing cbs.

  12. Moonlight was the best, I find this news to be really crappy… Finally a show that was different and brought something fun… what a shame. Bad move for CBS dropping this one..

  13. I can’t even convey how heartbroken, sad, devastated…I guess you get the picture. I woke up every Friday feeling like Christmas morning and counted down…14 hours, 17 minutes til Moonlight…3 hours 21 minutes til Moonlight, etc. Now every Friday will be Black Friday without Mick, Beth & Josef.
We can only pray someone somewhere has the intelligence to grab this gem for their network and
save us all from this emptiness…

  15. I feel like my heart got ripped out of my chest. God I love Moonlight and Alex O’Loughlin. This is why I never watched TV before. As someone in the coveted demo I am so mad networks never give me what I want.
Finding and loving Moonlight gave me hope in TV. Guess I’m a chump, huh?
I hope from the bottom of my heart that Alex continues to get a chance to show his talent because he is a pure gem. He gave his heart and soul to Moonlight. He must be heartbroken. We love you Alex and we’ll support your next project.

Nikki, do you know what the deal is with that Mike Birbiglia pilot? I believe you said the other day it was looking like CBS was gonna pick it up and was enthusiastic about i?

    Comment by Greg — May 13, 2008 @ 11:55 am

  19. That’s kind of a good news/bad news thing, isn’t it?

Good news: The Unit will be back.
    Bad news: Moonlight won’t.
First of all, I think the expectation that a genre show will perform any better than Moonlight is just unrealistic. — And with regard to these genre type shows in general, I really think that somehow either the advertisers or the networks are missing the boat. I can’t believe that all that fan ferver doesn’t translate to cash somewhere — or wouldn’t if channeled creatively through some sort of appropriate advertising.
I suppose Moonlight is too much money for the CW to take it on — but if the CW weren’t so hellbent on an all Gossip Girl all the time strategy — they have the great basis for being genre central (Reaper, Supernatural, Smallville and Moonlight — maybe snag new Amsterdam or Journeyman) Moonlight gets higher ratings than anything on the CW.

Anyway, I’m very pleased about The Unit.

  20. Great, the only good show on CBS, and I’m talking about Moonlight, of course, got canceled.
I dont’ know who is in charge of pick ups and renewals at CBS, but I’m starting to believe they should seriously thinking about finding a new job… -__-’

    Comment by Ste — May 13, 2008 @ 12:00 pm

  21. Sigh… Why does CBS do this? Give us a nice, intelligent show, but because they’re not placing top-10 every week, they cancel them.

Anyone out there remember Forever Knight? Another vampire-turned-detective show (early 90s for you youngsters). We brought it back from the dead after being cancelled TWICE - three seasons over five years is what we got.

Let’s hope another network picks up Moonlight. It deserves a second chance.

    Comment by Copper — May 13, 2008 @ 12:04 pm

  22. Speaking as a person who watched Moonlight, but wouldn’t consider herself as an avid fan (as in this show being part of my ‘must see’ TV), I found Moonlight far too reminiscent of another show, Forever Knight, in the vampire longing to change his immortality for humanity and the girl love interest helping him. However, Forever Knight had more going for that than just this one storyline, it had the father vampire figure who saw the lead as his son and was doing everything he could to foil the lead’s quest for humanity so that he could save his family. That second storyline was far more compelling than the first storyline and the richness of those two storylines melded together made far more compelling television than Moonlight is and makes Moonlight vapid in comparison in my opinion. Oh, and Forever Knight, also had a great buddy cop relationship going for it too in the first season. And yet, Forever Knight could not make it past two seasons in post-primetime time slot, not even in prime time which is a tougher nut to crack.

  23. Moonlight Cancelled! I guess I’ll have to start date nights with the hubby again, and… CBS is DEAD as far as I’m concerned. I’m never watching it again. Moonlight was the only show I actually took interest in anyway. CBS YOU ROYALLY SUCK!

    Comment by Ian — May 13, 2008 @ 12:32 pm

  27. Re: Moonlight - Networks miss the boat all of the time when they have a show that’s cutting edge. Look at ‘Star Trek’ years ago. It was cancelled after only a couple of seasons and STILL has a huge following. Maybe FOX will pick up Moonlight, since that network isn’t afraid to take a chance on something new and fresh. I guess CBS is content to have us suffer through another lame ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ because they don’t cost anything to make. Sad…..

    Comment by Diane — May 13, 2008 @ 12:34 pm

  28. I really can’t understand the canceling of Moonlight. How ridiculous. I’m a fan of The Unit but I have to say that Moonlight was something really special, in my opinion. Shame on CBS. But, what else is new.

    Comment by Pam — May 13, 2008 @ 12:34 pm

  29. I’m really sick of networks refusing to give shows a chance. Either they really suck at picking new shows or they don’t give them enough time to develop. I don’t think there is any of their new dramas that are still on the schedule. Something is wrong if you can’t make one work. And I think it is because they won’t give it time and listen to the passionate viewers who would show loyalty to the network. Is it any wonder viewership is down?

CBS lost me as a viewer without Moonlight. I’d rather re-watch West Wing than support that network.

    Comment by Jennifer — May 13, 2008 @ 12:37 pm

  30. Thanks a lot, CBS. You actually had a viewer sitting home early Friday nights (well, OK, sometimes I Tivo’d) to watch a show, Moonlight–but no, that’s not good enough. Well, it’s entirely likely you’ll replace it with a show that does even worse, and I hope you do. Thanks for being loyal to your viewers. Hey, why don’t you cancel HIMYM next? That’s popular too!

    Comment by Thea — May 13, 2008 @ 12:47 pm

  31. Glad to hear HIMYM and Rule of Engagement were picked up for another season. Both shows are well written and are enjoyable to watch. I miss well written sitcoms! I am curious if CBS will introduce a new night of comedy. The big question is, which night. Hopefully Tuesday. Wednesdays are worse the Fridays on CBS with regards to the survival of shows.

I just wish NBS would at least give Las Vegas a proper conclusion!!!!

  40. How could anyone say HIMYM is not funny? Perhaps someone with an axe to grind?

It is really funny and so inventive, and without being the typical crude, sexist, and hateful sitcom. It is an amazing show to be so funny and different, but also warm and charming.

  41. I agree with the above comments. I don’t see how any corporation can go with the old ratings systems with things like DVR’s and Tivo’s. What I can’t get around to watching on air time I just record. I hate any reality TV and love it when something like moonlight comes around. But more profit with reality TV/Game shows so that is what we get. I’m going to start playing more video games. Much more interesting that what networks are trying to release nowadays.

  45. What is it with CBS cancelling all the good show the last couple of years. You don’t even give the shows a chance befor you are cancelling them. The shows such as Shark, Moonlight, and Men In Trees should definately should be saved, but yet you are getting carried away with all these reality shows. Let get real I don’t want to see some guy seemingly falling in love, how possibly could someone fall in love with one person when he as 10+ women throwing themselves at him. Let get real ah. At least with these show you know that this is no real lives just a way to enjoy the night by watching great TV.

  46. This is why I have stopped watching shows on CBS. They think for a second that a new show isn’t going to make as much money as CSI and pull the frickin’ plug. That’s happened one too many times for me. Never again. Buh bye, CBS.

SCI FI would you like an excellent series that won the PCA and has great ratings and a good following? Or maybe USA? I noticed they even picked up one of USA’s programs or are they just trading around? Really don’t care. NO MORE CBS.

    Comment by Sandy — May 13, 2008 @ 2:27 pm

  49. I am heart broken about Moonlight. It did really well for a genre show. 8 million weekly. I agree with a previous poster about CBS and advertisers missing the boat. I am also in the demo and I bought alot of stuff because I saw it on Moonlight, like my iPhone. I really hope another network will pick up this great show.

    Comment by Suzanne — May 13, 2008 @ 2:46 pm

  50. I am just about done with network tv. The shows that actually try to do something beyond the same old formulas get cancelled long before they have time to develop an audience because they get just a few episodes or maybe a season to do it or die. They put riskier shows on difficult nights and times, don’t put too much into marketing them, and then expect them to flourish. Someone mentioned Firefly and that was the classic example. Fox put it on a crap night, almost immediately started preempting it with sports, started moving it around without any real attempt to let fans know where it was going next on the schedule, and then expected it to gather an audience by magic.

The networks are being run by cowards, bean counters, and cowardly bean counters and if it doesn’t change, I am not the only one who has better things to do with my time. They worry about competition from cable networks, online media, and so on when they are their own worst enemies. Why should I bother giving them a chance when they cancel every new show I start to like? I can save myself the angst and anger and buy the series on DVD if it actually survives long enough to be worth watching. Get your acts together networks, get some guts, or continue making yourselves less and less relevant.

  57. I’m so disappointed that CBS can’t see what they have in Moonlight. They are making a huge mistake, they’ve got an extremely loyal fanbase, and Moonlight has done consistently well in it’s time slot on Friday. It makes no sense to let it go. CBS execs need their heads examined.

    Comment by ETS — May 13, 2008 @ 4:25 pm

  58. I cannot believe, like so many others on here, that Moonlight was cancelled! It was such a great show. LOVE Josef!

    Comment by Julie — May 13, 2008 @ 4:29 pm

  59. What’s interesting is that Moonlight pulls in around 8 million viewers, while fashionista Gossip Girl on CW does only 2.5 million. My guess is that demos saved Gossip Girl (tweens) and killed Moonlight (too old). The Unit I’d guess skews heavily male and may have saved it — almost nothing on CBS skews male except the Unit and Numbers. It might make a good Friday pairing, with cross-overs.

Why not take the show and go to Hulu.com or ModernFeed.com or whatever? Maybe even set up their own site and charge $2 an episode download? Heck if half the fans did so, that’s still $8 million per episode. I mean, why not?

Someone is going to be the first to go from prime-time cancellation to web-only and make money. Why not Moonlight? [You could probably shoot cheap in and around LA, with just a few of the actors.]

    Comment by Jim Rockford — May 13, 2008 @ 4:37 pm

  60. I just can’t believe this. I’m also in the demographic and they’re really not listening to us sometimes. Moonlight is a great show and never deserved the cancellation. Go to other sites. We’re trying to save it. It’s too good to let go. Find out if anyone else is interested in picking it up!

Boo, frickin, hoo. Go watch MTV or something.

    Comment by kolrabi — May 13, 2008 @ 5:27 pm

  66. I didn’t watch Moonlight because I already watched a better version called “Angel” so it being cancelled won’t even be a blip in my concern.

And i think Shark was too much of a combo show: Put three or four good ideas that work in other shows, dillute them and then hire well known actors to prop up the weak plot points.

    meanwhile journeyman is still canceled…

    Comment by Dorkusbob — May 13, 2008 @ 5:31 pm

  67. Thanks for the update Nikki. As to CBS: I will never tune into your network again. Goodbye!
kolrabi…it was not a bunch of losers and teenagers trying to back Moonlight. Many of the viewers were successful individuals falling into the coveted age advertisers wanted to sell to. You obviously have no idea what you speak of to speak so falsely in regards to it.

    Comment by Vanc — May 13, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

  68. Shame on me for having faith CBS could ever have the kahunas to stand behind any show but reality and 101 CSIs. I myself have lost interest in any of your shows. You have disappointed me and so many others. You just have no idea what you lost. And the ones you decided to keep? Oh please…. Comment by ronnie — May 13, 2008 @ 7:13 pm

  72. I am royally angry at CBS for canceling Moonlight! But, this is what always happens to decent television shows. Yes, it’s a genre series and one of the darkest subjects in the Sci-Fi universe, but overall, ML is a “decent” series with a highly moral lead character from the old school.

Contemplating further on why the network would cancel this show it dawned on me that just maybe it wasn’t “new age” enough to satisfy a lot of viewers in California. It has an endearing almost innocent love story between a man and a woman, which might seem strange to some. Mick not only believes in old-fashioned love but he also believes in justice and out of date principles like right and wrong. A vampire with principles and morals is, indeed, strange in the face of our morally bankrupt culture.

But that was Moonlight’s charm and why it drew in so many fans, especially female ones. Mick was a hero, a good guy. And he wasn’t jaded or toting a mile long suitcase of emotional baggage. He was confident and self-assured. These are the kinds of heroes we still need and want to see again in our fantasy realms.

Like I said on another CBS forum, Moonlight brought me back to network television after a 10-year absence. Now, that they’ve canceled the show, I will go right back to my previous habits, which was mainly internet activism. For this ML fan, I will make it a point not to spend my hard-earned wages on one CBS sponsor and they can take that to the bank!

  79. “My guess is that demos saved Gossip Girl (tweens) and killed Moonlight (too old). ”

Moonlight won the 18-49 demographic AND its timeslot in the last two episodes, and performed better than usual in the episode before that. I think this cancellation decision has nothing to do with ratings. ALL Friday night shows suck in the ratings, so getting 8 million people to watch a show someone like kolrabi never heard of on a night when most folks are doing something else spoke well of it, IMO.

Moonlight was troubled from the beginning–from the recasting of all the parts except the lead after the pilot was shot, to having three showrunners in less than seven months, to several creative arguments behind the scenes. It started off shakily and took a long time to build a following. I think CBS just lost patience with it, didn’t know how to make it work, didn’t understand its audience, and had no faith in it. Which is why it was so badly promoted that, well, people like kolrabi never heard of it. More people have heard of a cable show like Reaper, I suspect, than Moonlight.

Moonlight deserves a second chance, with its current set of writers and a showrunner who understands both soap opera and vampires, on a cable network that is comfortable with the unusual.

  80. Just goes to show that people that make the decisions at CBS have no imagination and vision. I am in the UK and only got Moonlight as it was shown on Living UK. I can’t believe that such a well written and acted show will not be give a second season, when more and more poor reality tv shows are renewed.

I wish they would listen to those that watch the shows.

It’s an intelligently written and well-acted show which has broader appeal than the usual vampire-tv-fan. It’s a travesty that it’s not given a second series! I can’t believe they have cancelled it!

  84. Rules back for a 3rd season is great news! I watched it for the first time this season and was shocked it was so funny. David Spade really made that show a classic comedy series. Without him its just another run of the mill screwball comedy. Thank God for single guy human in a world of touchy feely CBS comedies.

  86. You know, I can’t help but be really upset right now at CBS! I have been a devoted MOONLIGHT fan since day one and lent my support and $$ to the cause AND the network advertisers… I even started watching Ghost Whisperer and Numbers because of MOONLIGHT…. SO CBS …Your numbers for the other shows increased because of MOONLIGHT and IMO they will now suffer as well… I will try to find a network that listens to its viewers. I know its hard to please everyone but this just seems backwards!! Perhaps another network will make a home for MOONLIGHT and the fans will support and follow it!

    Comment by Sandi — May 14, 2008 @ 9:17 am

  87. I vote with my remote. So, bye-bye CBS. No more CSI, Cold Case, 60 Minutes, etc. I cannot believe that a network could be so stupid as to cancel a show (Moonlight) that won the People’s Choice Award for Best New Drama. There must be something going on that the fans don’t know about. Well, anyway, I hope the cast will move on and give us more opportunities to see them on TV or movies. Alex, Jason and Sophia are great. It’s amazing that the fan base is so huge considering that CBS fired the original writers and show runners, didn’t advertise it and put it in the week’s worst time slot. I think all the hype in the end was just to sell advertising. They played all of us for fools. Well, I’m no fool. I checking out. See ya, CBS. No, wait, I won’t be seeing you. Your loss.

    Comment by Carol — May 14, 2008 @ 10:49 am

  88. CBS is beginning to stand for ‘Completely Bungles Scheduling’, and that’s the polite version….

One of their excuses for the cancellation of Moonlight is that it’s not keeping viewers from Ghost Whisperer. I don’t watch GW, but I do tune in for Moonlight, as do several other people I know.

The Neilsen system is flawed. They really need to come up with a better way to measure demographics, because you don’t ever see those boxes in a normal home. There’s no reason why they can’t use the digital cable boxes people use to build a more realistic profile of what shows get watched.

Anyway, you can get constant updates at moonlight-detective.com, I believe. They have a thing from Alex O’Loughlin’s MySpace that he posted when the show got the boot.

I’m not advertising for them or anything, I’m not even affiliated, I just thought it would be some hope for Moonlight fans.

Every crew member has a horror story about when he went off on them, when he turned his evil soulless eyes on them! When they decided that unemployment was better than walking on eggshells around that control freak. I hope that he gets some tweener pregnant and she takes all of the money he earned stepping on the crew of Shark. Let it be know James, we all and I mean ALL hated you and that would include the rest of the cast who you tortured as well. Attention all networks, please check in with FOX if you have any plans on using this troll, just give a call to the production guy he banned from the set or the current person who refused to work on the show.

  100. Unfortunate about Moonlight. I found it to be quite watchable, with some nice beats on the Vamp mythos. As an earlier commenter said, though, I found many rather transparent transplantations from “Angel,” which IMHO, was a far better show. I am somewhat disappointed that Moonlight was not renewed, but it will make nowhere near as heavy a hit on me as did the cancellation of “Firefly” by Fox.

By contrast, the news that “The Unit” *will* be renewed fills me with great joy. I was terribly worried that I would not get to see those superb characters again!

    Mixed bag, as usual.

If another network happens to pick up Moonlight, I’ll be there and will be extremely loyal to that network. I haven’t felt like this about a TV show in a long time. You can add me and my family to your list of lost viewers CBS. If you think this will just blow over and I’ll forget my vow to not watch CBS anymore, you have no idea how angry I am. You see you definitely had me on Tuesdays with NCIS and The Unit and then you recently got me on Friday’s with Moonlinght. You also had me watching Cold Case on Sunday’s (here and there for Cold Case…kinda losing interest). Well guess I will be a Tuesday only kinda CBS girl!

Hey I got an idea CBS, renew Moonlight and I will renew my Friday Night schedule with you.

I will keep my fingers crossed and if CBS can not see the fan following for Moonlight, hopefully another network will be able to see it…

  104. I am so very, very upset and sad — they took another good show away from its fans. The tv executives never ever LISTEN to their viewers. They just do what they want and don’t care about the public at all. Very selfish - very unworthy of us watching much more television. There isn’t that much on that’s entertaining any more. Moonlight was fresh, new, exciting, different - the fanbase grew and grew during and after the strike. The stars have been on talk shows, featured in many magazines, been the talk of fans at their workplaces and over the Internet. The storylines were different and interesting and the actors were growing better and better in their individual roles. They were really meshing as a cast. Of course Alex O’Loughlin — what can one say — ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’ve always been a true LOST and Josh Holloway fan 1st and foremost but Moonlight & Alex — you’re right up there with that. I’m so tired of others deciding what I like and watch — how about all you Moonlight fans and fans of the few other great shows left on television these days (exclude the way too many stupid and boring reality shows and dry dramas) to create THE PEOPLE’S NETWORK!!!!! I have simple pleasures after a hard day at a stressful job, living in this financially and economically strapped world we live in right now — I want to come home and relax and forget my troubles and just be entertained — something that puts a smile on my face and in my heart. Makes me forget all the problems for a little while. STOP TAKING THESE FEW PLEASANT THINGS AWAY FROM US — give us our MOONLIGHT back!!!!! And don’t put it on some obscure network like CW — not everyone gets these. Put it on a regular network so we all can watch it. Love you Alex and the rest of the cast — we’re all pulling for your return. OH, Eh Hem … I almost forgot one very, very important thing — evidentally CBS did entirely — MOONLIGHT won the People’s Choice Award for favorite new drama, with more than 10 million votes. See …. the “people” voted for it and you still didn’t listen to us. Maybe you should get a hearing aid. The “People” want Moonlight back - no excuses.

If I never see another reality show it will be too soon. To say I am insulted is putting it mildly,I oject strongly to the networks assuming that we all have the intelligence of a gnat and will be satisfied with inane, boring and totally dull reality TV.

I’m from the UK and Moonlight and Heroes are the only TV shows I watch every week without fail. They are the

  109. I am totally sad and confused by the cancelation of Moonlight. I am from Australia, our Channel 9 only aired 6 episodes then cancelled it, without any warning . It was as though they di not want the show to be successful. I only found it by surfing the channels, it was not promoted likt all the reality garbage. Everyone I spoke to said the same, we all could not believe that finally a show that was was worth watching. I liked Angel, but foukd Moonlight to be more superior in story lines, they made you believe that they walked amongest us, and the chemistry between Mick Beth and Josef was amazing.
I have never felt like this about any other TV show in my 54 years. every week I looked forward to sitting down for one hour and being entertained and forgetting the problems of todays society. Please CBS reconsider and put your loyal watchers before greed.

  113. How stupid are the folks at CBS? You don’t cancel the People’s Choice winner. Maybe if they knew how to run a network, they would have invested a bit of effort and money to promote a great, new show like Moonlight. Instead they spent time promoting asinine shows like The Price is Right. Wake up CBS. We want quality TV. I, for one will not be watching CBS again. They have broken my heart for the last time. I will not get involved in their shows just to have them give up and leave me devastated.

I think CBS made a bad decision, yet again anyone remember Jericho. An example is on ABC they had a mid season show called Eli Stone. Now I found it to be a good show. I think they only had 8-10 shows because of the strike. It was RENEWED!!!!! The did that to give it a chance. ABC was smart, CBS is dumb. At least CBS could have done a mid season to bring the viewers some closure. I’m hoping that another network will pick up the show. If the CW does that would be great seeing as I already watch them on Thursdays for Smallville. Let’s hope that the end has not come for Moonlight.

  116. Unbelieveable, CBS is so-o-o-o-o-o stupid. Moonlight was the best new show I had seen in years, and they couldn’t wait to kill it. I read that they are going to do the We Need Girlfriends pilot. They will probably ruin that show too. Unfortunately, I live in Cleveland and the Browns are shown on CBS most of the season, but I am willing to listen to the radio every week instead of watching it, because I am so sick of CBS. Maybe they should have remamed it “CSI:Moonlight”, and then it would’ve gotten renewed.(I actually enjoy all of the CSI shows, but with the way that CBS is so disloyal to their viewers, makes me angry enough to give those up to) Maybe Jerry Bruckheimer will wise up, and go to another network, when he has a new show from now on.

    Comment by Robert — May 18, 2008 @ 3:57 am

  117. I have no idea what is going through their thick heads, cancelling Moonlight is one hell of a bad move to make.

I personally hated the Unit series, i am sure alot of people loved it, but i didn’t, i couldn’t get into it.

But Moonlight was the only vampire show i could get into since buffy, Angel wasn’t all that and it lasted ages.

Though my family ain’t much of a vampire type fan, but i loved the show and they had better start it up again, cause it seems they are ending the good shows, but renewing the terrible ones.

How i met your mother? snooze-fest for me…it always gets me to sleep, its boring…..BRING BACK MOONLIGHT!!!!

It won the People’s Choice Award with over 10 million votes and 8 million viewers. ALEX O’LOUGHLIN won the Sexiest SciFi Actor award. HOW CAN YOU CANCEL THAT. Well, I guess my days of tuning in for anything has to offer are over. I’ll be over on the CW watching Supernatural.

I’m in that coveted mid to late 20’s demographic, and this is one viewer who no longer sees one thing of merit worth tuning into on their network.

And sadly, even if they did manage to come up with another decent show I wouldn’t bother watching it and getting invested with the story… they’ve proved exactly how discardable a good show is to them.

They did it with Moonlight, just as they did it with Jericho.

Ed Sullivan would be turning in his grave to hear what CBS is doing today. Though, I do imagine he would not be surprised. It was a change of CBS executives that cancelled his show.

  140. I doomed another show. Every show I ever liked gets canceled prematurely, usually <1 year. In fact my degree of affection for a show is a pretty strong predictor of it’s imminent demise. Some notable exceptions are VM, which lasted 3 whole seasons (!) or maybe 2.5 if you consider the stuff they started frantically doing to it, and BtVS, which holds the all time record for withstanding my curse.

Likewise, my degree of loathing predicts a show’s longevity. I predict a happy future for reality TV, X with the stars, Survivor, etc.

  141. Yeah, CBS is really getting on my nerves, killing off people in the CSI shows and now killing one of my new favs…never watched much on Fridays but have since Ghost Whisperer and Moonlight….this stinks….

  144. Moonlight being cancelled sucks. I love Moonlight. It was on of the greatest show I’ve ever seen. Man, talk about a broken heart. Craptastic news.

  146. I can’t believe that another great show has been taken away. So what if it is the loyal watchers that tune in now. Buffy was the same way at first then that show skyrocketed. You haven’t even given Moonlight it’s chance. Maybe when it’s rerun time you should consider showing some Moonlight episodes and not 3 hours of Ghostwhisperer. I love that show too but that is how this business works. That is when people get hooked into these shows. You have all summer, show them and see what happens. I bet you would get a lot of response. Besides if you keep getting the loyal watchers ticked off you may not have any watchers!

  147. you suck people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how could you cancel moonlight??? THAT SHOW WAS EPIC
you must pick it up again,i couldn’t believe that with 8 mill viewers it got cancelled.

    Comment by Shoop DW — May 27, 2008 @ 9:14 pm

  148. CBS please reconsider giving us more Moonlight. You got it right with this show! When the list of vampires names was delivered (in one episode), I thought great, now we will have another dimension added to the fugitive plot! It’s a clever show, and the chemistry among the cast is wonderful! The fan base continues to grow. Please bring it back!

  149. CBS is so full of sh!t. As others have stated, the only show on the network worth watching except Numbers. And I only got into that show because of Moonlight. I’m done with these people.

  151. CBS - YOU SUCK! I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU HAD THE F-ING GALL TO YANK MOONLIGHT. YOU NEVER, EVER PROMOTE YOUR SHOWS THE WAY THE REST OF THE NETWORKS DO, SO WHAT ELSE CAN YOU EXPECT? HAVING A NEW SERIES ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AT 9 PM, TOO? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? MOVE IT TO ANOTHER NIGHT BEFORE YOU GIVE UP ON IT. LOOK HOW LONG CHARMED, BUFFY AND ANGEL RAN, GIVEN THE RIGHT TIME SLOT…

    YOU’RE COMPLETE MORONS!

  152. Hi, i’m a Swedish Moonlight-fan. The show came to Sweden ’bout a week ago. I just fell inlove with it and the cast. And then, when i want more of it, i read there is no second season, it’s cancelled… Moonlight is great!!!! How can they do this to me, to us?? CBS, u’ve got to do a second season u simply have to.

  155. OK!!, First, it’s Fox 16 getting rid of K’Ville and other good shows, now it’s CBS. I wish USA or FX will continue Moonlight. CBS likes to show comedies that really aren’t funny. The only time I watch them is when Moonlight was on, the Unit and Cold Case. This is ridiculous and I guess I will just stick with watching and buying movies, than waste my time with local television programs. Just weak!!!

  159. I am so upset that CBS has cancelled Moonlight. What are they thinking? All of my family and friends watch this show faithfully. It has been appointment television at our home. Why is it nothing good gets kept on the air. It was something refreshing and different. I know a lot of unhappy people that will be watching a different network. They better rethink their
programming. This show has really developed a faithful following. Why don’t you actually listen to the
    people that watch the shows!!!!!

    Comment by Paula — June 2, 2008 @ 7:53 pm

  160. My 18-year-old daughter and I watched Moonlight every Friday that it was on. We just love Mick, he is the hottest vampire we have ever seen (on TV and movies), he can turn me! Anyway, I am so MAAAAD that they canceled it. We watch Ghost Whisperer and then Moonlight. It’s such a good show, why on earth would it be canceled, please bring it back to us. We will miss Mick so much. He is much hotter as Mick than he was as the gangster guy in the movie The Invisible. Please Alex, do something quick, make CBC bring yall back. xoxoxoxoxoxo

  161. REALLY–cbs as usual you screwed up; Moonlight has a heavy following and yet off the show goes –could you justify why it has been cancelled with all the positive coments–if there is a problem with vamps.or one of the higher ups doesn’t care for it well let people who like light enterment e n j o y— life is stressed enough; an hr. away from serious stuff is a bonus or is that too much for some of the big wigs to concieve that concept.
If the “powers that be” would r e a d the possitive coments maybe they might rethink their hasty decission.

  164. I’m from the UK and have watched Moonlight religiously every single week since it started. It’s the best show I’ve seen for a while. It’s the only show I’ve seen in a long time that has made me say “no I can’t go out tonight Moonlight’s on”. I can’t believe you are not continuing this show! It SUCKS!! I certainly won’t be watching anymore shows made by CBS!! Let’s hope someone else has the sense to pick it up and run with it because it seems to have a worldwide following!

    Comment by Natalie — June 8, 2008 @ 9:52 am

  165. I can’t think of a good reason to watch CBS any more either, since the cancellation of Moonlight. That was the only show left on CBS worth watching, for a long time now. I’ve continued to be loyal to Without a Trace, hoping it would return to its former excellence, but since that doesn’t seem to be happening, I’m quittin CBS.
As for Numbers, the only time the show was anything but boring and annoying was the time that Tony Scott directed it (this last seasons opening episode).
Is CBS trying to commit suicide, or what?

    Comment by Jolene — June 8, 2008 @ 2:21 pm

  166. crap CBS!
    bring back moonlight..dang it!

  167. I would really hate to see Moonlight canceled. I didn’t even know what channel CBS was until that show came on, it was the only one on there that I watched. All Moonlight fans should go to savemoonlight.com and at least sign the petition. Be heard!
I’m sure it will turn up for another season. If not CBS, then somewhere else.

    Comment by Elizabeth — June 10, 2008 @ 11:24 pm

  170. I love watching moonlight….I just love the show. I cant believe CBS would do something like that. What about us(viewers) dont we have a say so after all we are the ones who dedicate our time in falling in love with these shows. I am really dissapointed and these are the reasons why people give up on watching tv in general. CBS U SUCK!!!

  174. THAT SHOW JERICHO MADE IT BACK FOR A SECOND SEASON WHY NOT MOONLIGHT!!!

    Comment by Patty — June 17, 2008 @ 1:11 pm

  175. CBS is no longer a channel on my television, vcr, or satellite. There’s no reason to watch it. The one show that was intelligent that I actually liked and they canceled it. What’s the point in keeping a channel that I didn’t watch outside of Moonlight? Moonlight was a kick ass show and now that it’s gone, there’s no reason on earth in the universe to watch CBS. Oh well, not that one person not watching will make much of a difference but when 8 million aren’t watching, maybe they’ll notice. “Reality” tv is dead, quit beating that damn dead horse already.

    Comment by Melissa — June 21, 2008 @ 7:31 pm

  176. COME ON CBS you have a chance to show not everything is about MONEY - sometimes quality has to account for what the people want. There are so many people who love MOONLIGHT so please reconsider. It’s not too late and this show is a winner. It was never advertised properly here in the UK.
So come on CBS - put season one back on and watch the fan base grow and grow. This show is for young and old alike - Alex is sooooooooo great as Mick St John - SAVE MOONLIGHT PLEASE

Moonlight is THE Show! Very very good series. Don’t let it die.

  178. Such a shame to cancel such a good show. So much reality shows on TV. This show was my favorite on television and now gone. Bye CBS, this was worth staying home on Friday nights. Moved from NY to So. Carolina and made sure that cable was hooked up immediately so we would not miss it, and guess what? It got cancelled, just like all the SCI FI and supernatural shows do. This show had a following as Dark Shadows did so many years ago…and I watched that too!!!! So sad to see it go.

    Comment by Laura — June 25, 2008 @ 3:45 pm

  179. I cannot believe CBS would keep a stupid show like Big Brother on and some of their other mindless shows, yet cancel a wonderful, unique show like Moonlight. Why?
