Am I gathering correctly… this is a writer striking over residuals, “struggling against the corporatization of America” by stealing the work of songwriters and performers and distributing it for free?

Hero, Ministry
World War Three, KMFDM
Anything from Bear McCreary’s BSG Season Three Soundtrack.

Where are the classics, man? What about The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”… The Door’s “Five to One”… U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love)”… Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line” or Tesla’s “Signs”… no wait, that last one won’t work to well.
Comment by Screenwriter John — November 13, 2007 @ 1:20 am
Heh, not paying the songwriters and performers for this music is a tad hypocritical. Surely David and I aren’t the only ones who recognize this….right?

“Soup is Good Food” - the Dead Kennedys
“There is Power in a Union” - Billy Bragg

David Poland — yeah, that thought rather occurred to me as well. Mind you, if you take the mindset of the members of The Clash, who pretty much had a career-long pissing match with their label, it’s likely there’d be lots of encouragement to liberate their music from the corporate shackles (just as Trent Reznor’s doing now.)
(I give my music away these days. Donations welcome. And so forth.)
That said, I can probably come up with a much better mix. That’s just me, though.

Zevon’s “Even A Dog Can Shake Hands”. Nice choice, considering it was the theme song to the short-lived Action where the writer character was perpetually abused by Jay Mohr’s producer character.

How can one have a strike/picket mix without the Patti Smith version of “People Have the Power?” Lifts the spirits of union folk and strikes terror in the blackened hearts of execs. Excellent…*tents fingers*

“I Guess I Planted” by Billy Bragg and Wilco (lyrics by Woody Guthrie)
I guess I planted some long lonesome seed of a song
Way down inside me long ago
And now I can’t remember when it was
But it joined up with the rest of them and grows
It’s such a little song it don’t compare
With all your big ones you hear everywhere
But when it dawns way in the back of your mind
The big ones are made up of the little kind
Union song, union battled
All added up won us all what we got now
Union song, union battled
All added up won us all what we got now
I can’t even start to look around me here
Without hearing this song
And seeing all of us first separated
Hurt apart and afraid
Hungry for the union
And so we kept on
Singing and working, fighting till we got it
And this is the big union song I guess I hear
Union song, union battled
All added up won us all what we got now
Union song, union battled
All added up won us all what we got now

“The Writer” by U.F.O
“I am a writer and I am the news
If you cross me you know you’re gonna lose
And where you are it’s because of me
‘Cause overnight you know it don’t come free
I’ll put you up there or I’ll bring you down
‘Cause nothing moves without me in this town
I am a writer and I am the news
If you cross me you know you’re gonna lose”

Good mix, great idea…but everyone who’s interested will be purchasing these songs, right? Surely no one who supports the strike can justify burning CDs and handing them out on the picket lines(ahem, Down in the Streets), or sharing songs for free via the Internet.
