As everyone knows, SAG negotiations with the AMPTP officially started today. So Screen Actors Guild board member Esai Morales, Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti, and reps from Los Angeles unions today kicked off a rally for the Los Angeles Federation of Labor's Hollywood to the Docks campaign. This “March for Good Jobs” will include participants from all L.A. unions that also have active organizing campaigns or contract negotiations in 2008. The march will take place over three days and culminate in a rally at the docks on Thursday. Today's rally gathered at the La Brea Tar Pits park, across the street from SAG headquarters.

“March to the Docks”??
Um, what do the docks have to do with making movies and TV? And keeping this shattered biz working? Or is the plan to march to the docks, then jump off?

Why do I always hear about these things after the fact?

I walked a portion of the route along with fellow unionists from all over Los Angeles today, the first day of the Hollywood to the Docks march. Good energy level. Lots of blue SAG shirts out on a cloudy morning. And I met fellow blogger Dave Clennon. That reminds me, I have to add some old Orson Welles movies to my Netflix queue.
Damon - it’s not too late! Check out the events for Wednesday and Thursday at http://www.hollywoodtothedocks.org
Julius Fort - The march is not just actors, it’s unionists from all over Los Angeles. The march started today next to the SAG HQ and winds up at the San Pedro docks, as actors and longshoremen have contracts up this year. Lots of other unionists were out today as well - nurses, janitors, hotel workers, Teamsters, too many others for me to recall offhand. Check out the website. And get involved!

Marching to the Tar Pits?
Further proof that unions are going the way of the dinosaur?
Really, that story was a big, flat meatball of a pitch.

Are these the same longshoreman who make over $100k a year and shut down the ports anytime their shorts get in a bunch and wreck havoc on the economy?

Batting -
Um, no, we started at the Tar Pits and are marching to the docks. So the more appropriate analogy would be to evolution, going from being treated like lizards to being respected for the hard work we do.

This march was for unity between ALL Unions. We have to stick together to maintain our rights as workers. Here is a link to to the videos from the 3 day event.
