I thought that David Letterman improved considerably after he moved up to his present slot on CBS. It seems to me that either Jimmy Kimmel or Craig Ferguson might do the same if given the Jay Leno time slot. I find it hard to understand what makes Conan O'Brien popular at all, and can't see how he would improve in a better time slot.

Jimmy has shown his grace, character, compassion, loyalty and strength through the whole strike. Anyone not praising him for his support to the writers and his staff doesn’t know what a great guy he is. He is funny and will be on the air way after Leno leaves. The Neilson ratings show that Jimmy’s ratings have been up the past 4 years consecutively and Leno’s have been down consecutively every year.

Bev Chiesi said: Has anyone come up with a plausible explanation as to why NBC would overlook a great talent such as Jimmie Kimmel, to replace the master Leno with such a doofus as Conan O’Brien?

Yes, someone has come up with a plausible explanation for this - his name is Nielsen. And according to his ratings, based on five years of broadcasts, no one wants to watch the Jimmy Kimmel show.

From what I hear, ABC keeps renewing Kimmel because they do not want to give back the post-Nightline slot to affiliates, which is what would happen if they cancel the show. They plan to keep Kimmel on until 2009, when they will sign Jay Leno, and then cancel both Kimmel and Nightline.

That said, I know people who work for Kimmel and say he is a GOOD GUY. Also, he has sent lots of food to the picket lines. He's been great. And he deserves our thanks.

It seems like the worst thing we can say about him is that he wasn't self-serving (or savvy) enough to send out a press release at the beginning of the strike.

And Jimmy doesn't demean women and insult his audience members when they are chosen to help in his hilarious comedy bits. Look and learn, Jay. Your humor went out with the Rat Pack.

He's paying his people! Who cares if its PR or whatever, it's effin-showbiz. He's handing over cash to people who need it. End of story!

To Observer -

I don't get your point. If Nikki confirmed that he had been doing it all along then why not stop being callous and jut take it for what it is? A nice gesture.

Bringing up "ratio to salary" is also hilarious. Leno makes close to 30 million a year, Letterman over 30 and Conan is about to walk into his new fat contract. I have a feeling that Kimmel makes far less then all of those guys and appears to have been doing the right thing before it was "cool."

PS What did he get "slammed" for last week?

Has anyone come up with a plausible explanation as to why NBC would overlook a great talent such as Jimmie Kimmel, to replace the master Leno with such a doofus as Conan O'Brien? Watching Conan is like watching Sesame Street - silly stupid gags, and putting you to sleep!!! If there is a god, NBC will come to their senses (do they have any?) and pay Conan to go FAR FAR away, and get a REAL ENTERTAINER - Jimmie Kimmel. The channel button will never be tuned to Conan, that is a definite. Thank you, Jimmie, for all the great shows we havr enjoyed.

Are the A-list movie actors like Cruise, Clooney, Willis, Roberts, etc. each putting $1 million into a fund to underwrite the writers?

This seems a little too convenient, timeing-wise, for Kimmel, don't you think? I mean, the guy needs some good business PR and this would be it...but it's just toooo convenient. Hard to believe.

this info was probably virally spread by Kimmel's camp for good PR , especially after he got slammed last week.

before people deify Kimmel, what was his actual "out-of-pocket" to his "low-paid" low level staff, and in what ratio to his salary?

yes, the gesture is nice, regardless, but let's have the facts before the curiously timed deification of Kimmel commences.
