JOKER LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO BANK: 'Dark Knight' Breaks Ten Film Records: $67.1M Fri + $47.6M Sat + $43.5M Sun; Best Ever $158.4M Box Office Weekend; Biggest Non-Holiday FSS At The Movies

MONDAY AM: Bigger... Bigger... BIGGEST! The Dark Knight's weekend tally was more than first thought -- a record-setting $158.4M, according to Warner Bros. That comfortably beats Spider-Man 3's $151.1M for best-ever 3-day non-holiday weekend. The latest Batman installment's Sunday take of $43.5M was down only -8% compared to Saturday's $47.6M and set the best-ever Sunday total for its 9th record. Friday's final figure was lowered to $67.1M. TDK's 10th record beats the all-time first week tally.

SUNDAY 8PM UPDATE: I've just been told by unofficial sources that Warner Bros' The Dark Knight is playing to packed Sunday performances for over $40M and maybe as high as $43M. That would mean a 9th record for the latest Batman installment since Spider-Man 3's Sunday take in 2007 was a record-setting $39.9M. It's also now abundantly clear that the Warner Bros caped crusader will crush the old 3-day weekend non-holiday record set by Spider-Man 3 last year. Also, Dark Knight should break its 9th record by beating the all-time weekly tally. Meanwhile, in its first six days, DK will have grossed more than the entire run of director Chris Nolan's first installment Batman Begins.

SUNDAY AM: Warner Bros is reporting The Dark Knight will finish with a total North American weekend take of $155.3M. Here's the surprising studio breakdown: $67.8 million Friday, including those record-setting opening day midnight shows; $48 million Saturday (-29%), and projected $39.4 million Sunday (-18%). So if Sunday holds up, that FSS (Fri-Sat-Sun) non-holiday figure will be enough to snag the record from Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million. But it'll be close. The latest Batman installment did not set a record Saturday, leaving Spidey 3's best-ever $51.3M intact. That Friday to Saturday decline looks steep, but actually they mirror each other without the opening day midnight frenzy. Total domestic grosses for all the movies playing this weekend look around $253M. That easily shatters the best-ever FSS non-holiday overall record of $218.4 million set on July 7-9, 2006 when Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opened. Today, Some rival studios reported lower figures for Friday and Saturday and questioned Warner Bros numbers as well as believed the Sunday estimate was too aggressive. Meanwhile, in a successful bit of counter-programming, Universal's Mamma Mia! finished 2nd with $9.8M Saturday for a $27.6M opening weekend. Overseas, the ABBA musical has made a fast $72.6M in just 11 days. See Top 10 B.O. below...

Media By Numbers' OFFICIAL DARK KNIGHT RECORDS SO FAR (in order of occurrence):

1 - LARGEST NUMBER OF OPENING THEATRES WITH 4,366 (MORE THAN THE 4,362 DEBUT THEATRES OF PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END IN 2007).

2 - BIGGEST MIDNIGHT PREVIEW GROSS WITH $18.489 MILLION IN 3,040 THEATRES (BEATS STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH AND ITS $16.9 MILLION IN 2,915 THEATRES IN 2005).

3 - BIGGEST IMAX MIDNIGHT PREVIEWS SET AN NEW RECORD WITH $640,000 (INCLUDED IN THE $18.489 MILLION PREVIEW NUMBER).

4 - BIGGEST SINGLE-DAY GROSS IN BOX-OFFICE HISTORY WITH $67.850 MILLION (BESTS THE $59,841,919 SET BY SPIDER-MAN 3 IN 2007).

5 - BIGGEST OPENING WEEKEND GROSS IN BOX OFFICE HISTORY WITH $155.340 MILLION (BESTS THE $151,116 MILLION SET BY SPIDER-MAN 3 IN 2007).

6 - BIGGEST OPENING WEEKEND GROSS FOR AN IMAX RELEASE IN BOX OFFICE HISTORY WITH $6,214,061 MILLION IN 94 THEATRES WITH $66,107 PER THEATRE. (BESTS THE $4.7 MILLION SET BY SPIDER-MAN 3 IN 2007.) IMAX SHOWING AT FULL CAPACITY $1.9 MILLION ON SATURDAY ALONE.

7 - BIGGEST OPENING WEEKEND OF 2008 WITH $151.340 (BEATS INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL'S $101.137 MILLION FROM MAY 23-25, 2008)

8 - BIGGEST JULY OPENING EVER (BEATS PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST'S $135,634,554 ON JULY 7, 2006).

Believe it or not, there were other movies opening and playing at the box office.

In 2nd place, Universal's North American debut of its movie version of the globally popular Mamma Mia! musical proved great counter-programming against Batman. It made $9.6M Friday for what should be a 3-day weekend total of $28.1M, better than Hairspray's $27.4M and what the studio had expected especially since ABBA was never as big in the U.S. as overseas.  Exit polling showed that 3/4 of the audience was female, 64% were age 30 or older, slightly more than a third of the audience had seen the musical, while more than half had heard of it but not seen it. The main reasons given for seeing Mamma Mia! were the "musical numbers" (56%), followed by the "songs of ABBA" (49%), “I like musicals” (47%, skewing female), and Meryl Streep (47%, especially among older females).

Sony's holdover Hancock sat solidly in 3rd place with a $4.5M Friday and $5.5M Saturday from 3,776 plays for a $14M weekend and $191.5M new cume. The Will Smith actioner has now made a humongous $444M worldwide. No. 4 was Warner Bros' Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D, which dropped 47% from a week ago $11.9M for the weekend and new cume of $43M. Disney/Pixar's hit toon Wall-E made $2.9M Friday for 5th by weekend's end with $9.8M and new cume of $182.4M. But the surprise was 6th place Hellboy II: The Golden Army's 71% fall from grace after finishing a big No 1 last weekend. It made only $10M this weekend for a $56.4M new cume. Obviously, the Dark Horse comic character lost out to the way-more-famous DC Comics caped crusader. At No. 7, Starz/Fox's toon Space Chimps earned $7.3M for FSS. Universal's Wanted was 8th with $1.5M Friday and probably $5.1M for the weekend. At No. 9, Warner Bros' Get Smart took in a $4M weekend and $119.5M new cume. And Paramount's Kung Fu Panda jumped up to #10 with a $1.7M weekend and $206.5M new cume. One week after its debut, Fox's disastrous Meet Dave fell out of the Top 10 altogether.

SATURDAY 3PM: The Dark Knight's Friday opening was even bigger than first thought, according to final numbers come in -- not just $66.4M but $67+M in North American gross from a record-setting wide release of 4,366 theaters. That includes the $18.5M in midnight-to-3AM shows from a smaller pool of 3,040 venues. Now Warner Bros has smashed the record for the biggest midnight show ever (better than the $16.9M set by 2005's  Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith then playing in 2,915 venues), and the biggest single day ever (better than the $59.8M set by May 4, 2007's Spider-Man 3 in 4,252 venues, including midnight shows). So what about the weekend total? "$153M to $160M -- it all depends on Saturday results," my Warner Bros insider just told me.  That would be ANOTHER record-smasher!

The question is whether Dark Knight goes up or down -- and by how much either way. The Saturday number to beat is Spider-Man 3's $51.3M, which was down 14% from its Friday number. The FSS number to best is Spider-Man 3's $151M, including a take of $39.9M on Sunday. Interestingly, rival studios are hesitant to even venture a guess about the latest Batman installment's 3-day weekend total. "Saturday business will tell the tale of where this is headed," one rival studio bigwig stressed to me. Said another, "The hard thing about this movie is you don't know if all the shows tonight are already sold out, so their number might not move much."

Here is the way to think about Saturday and the weekend: if you start with $66.4M Friday and back out the $18.5M of midnight shows, then Dark Knight's comparable starting point is $47.5M. So if the pic is down 5% from there on Saturday, it would be $45M. If it were 10%, it would be $52M (what it would take to best Spidey 3's Saturday record). That is the most likely range for today. But those would be announced as $45M, down 30%, or $52M, down 20%, as they will be compared to the Friday number which included midnight shows. Sunday is likely to drop somewhere between 15%-20% from there. So Dark Knight needs to be $47M-$48M today to set itself up to best the weekend record.

FRIDAY 10:30PM: More numbers show The Dark Night opens to $65M Friday.

FRIDAY 5:30PM: Warner Bros sources tell me that The Dark Knight is opening to a humongous $60M today from a widest-ever release of 4,366 North American theaters. That's breathtaking box office gross, even for a mega-blockbuster! So the studio is privately preening that this latest Batman installment has scored the biggest Friday ever, beating Sony's previous record-setter Spider-Man 3 with $59.8M scored on Friday, May 4th, 2007. What also makes this number so stunning is that the Chris Nolan-directed DC Comics dark drama starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger is not as kid friendly as the comic book caper starring the Marvel webbed hero. Meanwhile, despite all the sell-outs this weekend, seats for The Dark Knight are selling at the astounding rate of 15 tickets per second at Fandango.com, the big movie ticket service. Clearly, the great word of mouth is spreading as well as the rave reviews: 90% positive among cream of the crop critics on RottenTomatoes.com. So far, the only breakdown available for Friday's box office is a record $18.5M from 12:01 AM showings, including a best-ever $640K for IMAX midnight previews.

FRIDAY 7AM: Warner Bros is poised to making Hollywood history this weekend. That's because its opening comic book caper The Dark Knight is already on its way to breaking records left and right today even as it's still sparking a ticket-selling frenzy across North America. I've just been told that the latest Batman installment's $18.5 million midnight shows broke the record of $16 million set by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. According to Media By Numbers, Imax showings of also set a record with $640K in the midnight previews. (This figure is included in the studio's overall.) According to Media By Numbers, IMAX showings of the Warner Bros mega-blockbuster also set a record with $640K for the midnight previews. This figure is included in the studio's overall 12:01AM screenings number of $18.4 million. Director Chris Nolan shot six major action sequences, including the opening six minutes and Joker's first appearance in the film, with IMAX cameras. This marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, deemed a revolutionary integration of the two film formats. Across North America, theater owners are working feverishly to squeeze in more screenings of the runaway success to meet voracious moviegoer demand. News reports were quoting fans as saying they'd pay $100 per ticket just to see the PG-13 pic.

Fandango.com, the largest online ticketseller, has just announced that Dark Knight has jumped to No. 2 on its Top 10 List of Advance Ticket-Sellers. It's No. 4 on MovieTickets.com's list. Fandango.com says it's now selling an average of nearly 10 tickets per second for the pic during peak periods, while MovieTickets.com cites more than 1,300 performances nationwide that are still sold out, including more than 220 in New York City and Los Angeles alone. These are extraordinary metrics underscoring Hollywood's belief that not just the individual but also the overall 3-day non-holiday box office record is going down this weekend.

Top 10 Advance Ticket-Sellers list from Fandango.com:
1. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
2. The Dark Knight (2008)
3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)
6. Hannah Montana 3D (2008)
7. Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King (2003)
8. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
9. Sex And The City (2008)

MovieTickets.com's Top Pre-Sale List Of All Times:
1.  Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
2.  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
3.  The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
4. The Dark Knight

EXCLUSIVE: Though they won't dare discuss this in public, I'm told that Warner Bros bigwigs are hoping for between $160 million and $170 million for Batman: The Dark Knight's 3-day weekend total gross from a record 4,366 North American theaters despite a 152 minute running time. Now that may be impossible, and a huge increase from the $130 million that the studio bosses were expecting earlier in the week, but anything over $100 million is going to be considered a humongous success. Because the ticket sales frenzy, from coast to coast, city to city, town to town, with almost 24/7 performances even in the hinterlands, new sceenings being squeezed in by the minute, online services selling an average of nearly 10 tickets per second for the pic during peak periods, and all those IMAX sell-outs, has everyone revved up.

Warner Bros toppers have their sights set on taking down every record, too. They especially want to better Sony's Spider-Man 3, which scored the best 3-day weekend opening of $151.1 million over May 4-6 last year. And to beat the best-ever 3-day non-holiday weekend box office overall , this Batman installment has to better $218.4 million in total domestic grosses set on July 7-9, 2006, when Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opened with $131.5 million. Meanwhile, see the Batman franchise numbers here.

My own box office gurus' predictions for this weekend are: a low of $100M to a high of $135M for Warner Bros' The Dark Knight from a record 4,366 North American theaters, a low of $20M to a high of $31M for Universal's Mamma Mia! in 2,976 venues (the ticket sales frenzy is driving this musical, well, batty), and $6M to $8M for Starz/Fox's Space Chimps in 2,511 runs.

DHD CONTEST: Dark Knight Predictions!

THURSDAY UPDATE: Here is the most recent sales info regarding Batman: The Dark Knight: Fandango, the nations leading movie ticket sellers, says it appears to be selling between 9 tickets per second for the pic. More than 2,000 sold-out showtimes. Add that to MovieTickets.com’s 1,600 and you’ve got close to 4,000 performance sell-outs! I'm told 1,700 of the sell-outs are for showtimes between 12:01 AM and 8:00AM Friday. And the number of locations in North America where the comic book caper will be playing -- 4,366 -- is an Industry record. There are sold-out shows through the weekend from Washington D.C. to Puyallup, Washington, and in towns like Bozeman, Montana and Fitchburg, Wisconsin. I can report that 6:00AM shows are scheduled in bif cities and small, from San Diego to Hazelwood, Missouri, and Tigard, Oregon, etc.

7PM: With two hours still to go until the clock strikes midnight ET, Dark Knight has reached MovieTickets.com's Top-5 Pre-sale List of All-Time:
1. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
4. Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert
5. The Dark Knight

Fandango COO Rick Butler says: “Friday is pacing to be our biggest ticket-selling day in company history. It’s very possible that we’ll break our hourly ticketing record by tomorrow morning.” Currently, Dark Knight represents 94% of ticket sales on Fandango.com, the nation’s leading movie ticketing destination.

As of 12PM today, MovieTickets.com already has over 1,600 performances sold out in North America, including over 300 in LA and NY alone. Warner Bros sources tell me that Imax has 1,600 shows in all U.S. screens for this weekend's opening. As of 5PM Wednesday, 1,400 of those shows were sold out.

As of 1PM today, Dark Knight is currently No. 9 on MovieTickets.com's Top-10 Pre-Sale List of All-Time, which includes IMAX ticket sales. It's currently ahead of two Spider-Man blockbusters (Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 2), three Harry Potter films (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Dark Knight accounted for 88% of tickets sold on MovieTickets.com on Wednesday. As of 12 PM, it has accounted for 87% of all tickets sold today.

WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Studio sources tell me that record-breaking advance ticket sales for Warner Bros' Batman: The Dark Knight "continue to grow at a pace unlike any other film in history". Even the number of locations in North America where the comic book caper will be playing -- 4,366 -- is an Industry record. There are also approximately 3,000 theaters that will start screening the actioner at 12:01AM Friday. Meanwhile, every IMAX show in New York City this weekend is sold out. By all accounts this should be Hollywood's best-ever 3-day overall North American weekend at the box office: the number to beat is last year's $151+ million. So Dark Knight's expected $130+ million opening, combined with Universal's anticipated $25+ million Mamma Mia! debut, should expand the marketplace by a huge number to include those two films and all the very popular holdovers like Sony's Hancock, Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Disney/Pixar's Wall-E, Warner Bros' Journey To The Center Of The Earth, and Universal's Wanted. As a Warner Bros exec emailed me, "Should be a fun ride this weekend..."

MovieTickets.com says that, four days prior to its release, Warner Bros' Batman: The Dark Knight has sold out 700 performances in North America and is outselling 3 of MovieTickets.com’s Top 10 Performing Films of All-Time. To date, the pic has more than 3-times as many advance tickets as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, more than 2-times as many as Spider-Man 3 and almost 2-times as many as Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers at the same point in the sales cycle. This fuels predictions that the latest Batman 152-minute pic can make $130+ million in domestic gross for the upcoming 3-day weekend opening because of round-the-clock showings.

In a recent MovieTickets.com survey, moviegoers aware of The Dark Knight expressed "wannasee" during its opening weekend in all four age groups polled: 24 & Under – 98%, 25 to 34 – 92%, 35 to 44 – 78%, 45 to 59 – 66%. In addition, the survey found that 86% of males and 76% of females polled said they intend to see it during its opening weekend.

Meanwhile Fandango (which sells tickets to more than 15,000 theater screens) reports that Warner Bros' The Dark Knight has grabbed a whopping 90% of all ticket sales for the upcoming weekend show. That's incredible considering it was still only Tuesday. COO Rick Butler claims fan anticipation is the highest since Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. "Moviegoer curiosity about the late Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker is helping fuel additional ticket sales, outside of the traditional action movie and Batman fan base."

Also according to Fandango, every showing at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 IMAX theater this weekend is sold out, including the Friday morning 4AM show. There is still an IMAX screening not yet sold out in New Rochelle, NY, at 6:10AM. IMAX tickets cost more than standard admission ($16 to $12 for adults in NYC).

And Comcast just released 6 exclusive videos of The Dark Knight it claims can;t be found anywhere else, as well as a new  videogame based on the pic.  Plus, let's not forget the onslaught of tie-in products...

It's understandable even if ridiculous that Warner Bros keeps trying to lower everyone's expectations for this behemoth blockbuster of a Batman Begins sequel. My sources at the studio keep insisting that Dark Knight will "only" make $90 million to $100 million for its opening 3-day weekend. I can't believe they're seriously suggesting that Dark Knight will make less than Iron Man.

But the WB insiders point to all the increased competition at the megaplex now as opposed to the beginning of May. Whereas my box office gurus are predicting domestic gross as high as $130M for the wildly anticipated Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale film because of all those record-breaking early ticket sales at North American runs, including IMAX. That would put it 3rd in terms of all-time opening 3-day weekends -- behind Spider-Man 3 ($151.1M on May 4-6, 2007)and Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest ($131.6M on July 7, 2006). One worry mitigating the Heath Ledger fanboy factor which Hollywood has mentioned is that the pic's 2 hour and 32 minute running time will limit showings. But that isn't an issue anymore since many theater managers/owners plan round-the-clock screenings during its midnight July 18 mega-debut.

'Dark Knight' Prediction: $130M Weekend

  1. Death is always good for business. I’m sure it’s a good movie and so is Heath’ performance, but i find this whole hysteria to be way out of any proportions. It’s only Batman movie.

    Comment by Ben — July 16, 2008 @ 5:06 am

  2. They have been using a very smart marketing campaign, and the advance buzz, especially over Heath Ledger’s Joker, has been phenomenal. Filmmakers would kill for that kind of buzz, they really would.

This could turn out to be the movie that defines the summer season.

Of course as a lifelong Batfan I’m currently wishing that I lived closer to a theatre. ;)

    Comment by Furious D — July 16, 2008 @ 5:09 am

  3. What kills me are the naysayers who claim that the only reason anyone is excited is because they want to see Heath’s final performance. And had he not died, the anticipation and hype wouldn’t be there for this film.

I think it’s stupid to think that. The anticipation has been there ever since the playing card featuring a Joker was shown at the end of “Batman Begins”. I saw that film twice in theaters, and both times the reaction when people saw the Joker card at the end was incredibly enthusiastic.

Also Warner Brothers has done a STELLAR job in promoting this film. I remember seeing “I Am Legend” last December, and they showed the opening sequence of “The Dark Knight” and it left me wanting to see the rest of the film right then and there.

So they have done a great job in building the hype and anticipation for this film throughout the filming process and into 2007 and 2008. And it seems like the reviews are indicating that it delivers.

So good for them if they break the box office this weekend. They worked hard for it.

    Comment by Bruno — July 16, 2008 @ 7:04 am

  4. Never expected this movie to be the one that would define the 2008 Summer but am beginning to believe the hype.

So far, none of the offerings seems to be the ONE that is special for 2008. Sure, we had Ironman, Dr Jones & Panda but one that stands out from the crowd, emm..Dark Knight.

Like I have said before, I do really hope Dark Knight will smash the weekend B.O that is currently being held by Silly-Salsa-Dancing Spidey 3 though I think the best bet will be none other than Transformer 2.

Here’s what Dark Knight is up against. Note the current champion for all the records is with Silly-Crybaby-Spidey 3(except 7)

    1) Biggest SINGLE DAYS : $59,841,919

    2) Biggest OPENING DAYS: $59,841,919

    3) Biggest FRIDAYS : $59,841,919

    4) Biggest SATURDAYS: $51,336,732

    5) Biggest SUNDAYS: $39,937,865

    6) Largest 3-DAY GROSSES : $151,116,516

    7) Biggest July PoTC2: $135,634,554

By the way, I don’t think the hype has alot to do with Ledger’s death. If anything, it is the movie that sell. Batman Returns was well-received and the faith was restored with the movie-goers, unlike Hulk.

I have nothing against Ledger. Kind of sad that he passed away so young and leaving a daughter that will never know her dad. But to give him full credit for Dark Knight’s success is simply just too much.

But knowing Hollywood, glorfying the death is a culture.

    Comment by Armand — July 16, 2008 @ 7:18 am

  5. There was strong “must see” status for this movie long before Ledger died.

The fact that the buzz has been great and yes, the Ledger factor, will have me seeing it at 330a on Friday.

    Comment by renton — July 16, 2008 @ 7:32 am

  6. The excitement surrounding the film has little to do with Heath Ledger. There is a huge market for super-hero movies done right, geeks like myself have been waiting 30+ years to see our favorite heroes on the big screen in a way that does them justice. The success of Dark Knight and Batman Begins has more to do with a great director and Christian Bale’s performance than it does the villain. We who love comics fantasize about being the hero, never the villain. If anything, Ledger’s death takes credit away from Bale.

    Comment by batfan1 — July 16, 2008 @ 7:34 am

  7. It has nothing to do with Heath’s death. i personally haven’t liked Heath in anything since the patriot, but from what I see of this joker, it scares me.
Scary movies are mostly ridiculous to me, but this joker character literally scares me. I think the movie is doing what it intended to do.
I enjoyed the first one and I am excited for this. Yes, there should be hype on ledgers character, not his death, but this character that brings nightmares to those who simply watch the commercials. There should also be hype that this will be an awesome sequel intended for those with a brain enough to vomit through the extremely lame spiderman movies. I hope to never see Tobey Macguire or Kirsten (Snaggletooth) Dunst again.

    Comment by Travis — July 16, 2008 @ 7:35 am

  8. Batman films pre-Bale were pretty lame. There were a few decent ones but most were stupid. The current cast with Bale, Caine and Oldman is tremendous. Three very strong actors and I will watch Caine and Oldman in just about anything. The last film was avery good and the hype with Ledger adds to the buzz. Most of the stuff Hollywood spews out is crap but the last Batman was very well done.

    Comment by Freddy — July 16, 2008 @ 7:38 am

  9. i would have to agree that it doesn’t have to do with Ledger’s death. I saw a very different preview while waiting for I Am Legend to start, and that preview alone blew me away. I didn’t know it was Ledger until weeks after i saw the preview. I’m definetly going to see it but will NOT be at opening weekend…too crazy…

    Comment by JF — July 16, 2008 @ 7:44 am

  10. I heard Heath “talks” like a Chicagoan in the movie, and even noticed so watching some of the commercials. Chicagoans are enamored of the short A vowel, and that comes through in Heath’s line readings.

  11. Yeah, Bruno, BUT the fact that Heath died has really made people more excited and anxious to see this new movie.

Come on. If he didn’t die, there wouldn’t be so much sold out tickets and anticipation.

Hell, I bet there’ll even be conspiracy theories buzzing up AFTER peopel have seen the movie. You know, like Jason Lee and “The Crow,” or Heather O’ Rourke with “Poltergeist.”

  12. All said and done, you can’t deny the fact that Ledgers death brought a lot of free publicity to the film it otherwise wouldn’t have had.

I do have to agree with the above posters that the marketing campaign was absolutely brilliant, although i got a little tired of it at the end,it’s still something you can’t ignore.

  13. As a fan, I am genuinely glad that this Batman will do well. I’m just sorry that Heath Ledger passed away. I know his death adds fuel to it, which is a shame because I think it would have easily gotten great attendance numbers just on the strength of his performance alone. But I’m glad that at least his family thought the movie was a good representation of Ledger’s immense talent.

  14. It’s a sad day in America when there’s such a frenzy over the performance of a drug addicted actor. There are thousands of people who die from drug overdoses a year but only the Hollywood elite get canonized.

The hype overshadows the rest of the cast, which is unfair and wrong.

    Comment by Writestuffla — July 16, 2008 @ 7:59 am

  15. I agree. The only reason all the hype is because of a dead guy as the role of the joker.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 16, 2008 @ 8:02 am

  16. Riiiiiiiiiight.

Because there was absolutely no hype about a new Batman movie, and, there wouldn’t be hype about a new Batman movie unless someone died. Further, Batman is not something that people are fans about on their lonesome so who knows where this is coming from?

Guys, there was hype about the movie when he was alive. Way back when, long before the movie was out. Doesn’t it seem appropriate that with every review going how awesome his performance is, and how awesome the movie is people are getting more and more excited?

Further, is it wrong to promote a movie now because someone in it died? Should people stop talking about The Wizard of Oz or maybe cut off mention of The Magnificent Seven?

  17. I loved Batman Returns and was so happy to see a Batman movie that was true to how I saw the character. That is why I am excited about seeing the second movie in this series. I read the comics at my cousin’s house as a girl and have been a ‘lifelong’ Batman fan. That is why I have advance tix to the midnight show for myself and my teenage son.

  18. I’d have to agree with the above comments “I don’t think the hype has alot to do with Ledger’s death”

The first (Nolan) Batman was an amazing film, if Hollywood should take note of how to create great ‘buzz’ like this again, they should consider doing what Batman did, hire good writers and good directors. Word of mouth will always be king.

  22. Agree with Bruno. There was a huge murmur through the crowd when Gordon played the Joker — on top of the sheer ecstasy “Begins” elicited, anyway. “Begins” grew the fanbase — directing, Bale (the “who are you working for?” sequence sent it over the top for moi) — now “Knight” will send it into the stratosphere. It’s warranted hype based on previous performance. Enough analysis….

  23. Christopher Nolan is one of the best young directors in Hollywood, and the real source of the excitement. His non-Batman movies (”Memento”, “The Prestige”) were also outstanding. If you haven’t seen “Memento”, just go rent it right now, you will not regret it.

This is not to take away from the very talented Heath Ledger, but it was Nolan that set the tone and created the environment that allowed Ledger to perform up to his full potential.

  26. Not spoken about is Christian Bale, who turned in an incredible performance on the last Dark Knight film. Everyone seems to forget that in the early 90’s, Frank Miller blew life into the Batman comic book series with this ‘dark’ rendition of the Dark Knight. People saying it is just a Batman movie need to check their history and check out those Frank Miller comic books. They, as I anticipate this film will be, are F*CKING INCREDIBLE.

This seasons sleeper hit will remain Ironman, which has performed far past $$$ expectations.

  33. THE DARK KNIGHT… Yeah… I like that.

I never knew Heath Ledger, but I loved his work. Among a younger generation of actors, I think he showed great depth and power as a performer. I will never forget his brief staggering performance as Billy Bob Thornton’s son in “MONSTER’S BALL.” He went to a place that few can go without being totally over melodramatic. He will be sorely missed.

His death still hits hard when we think optimistically about the life and career he might have had. Like James Dean and River Phoenix. Taken far too early.

I commend the marketing department of Warner Brothers for their celebration of his performance, rather than running away from his loss as is often the case when a performer passes before the release of a film. They have done a great Job… and frankly, though I haven’t seen the picture yet, I look forward to it. Plus it does have other positives in it’s favor… Look at the rest of the marvelous cast…

I think CHRISTIAN BALE has brought a new life to the most important part of Batman… Bruce Wayne. Also, MICHAEL CAINE has turned Alfred from a light sidekick into a major part of the action. Like Michael said in an LA Times Interview at the time of BATMAN BEGINS…
“He’s not just a butler… he’s BATMAN’S BUTLER!” Throw in the great MORGAN FREEMAN, AARON ECKHARD and
MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL, CILLIAN MURPHY and MICHAEL JAI WHITE who was “SPAWN” and “TYSON”. Plus there’s one of my favorite actors, who I still think could have also played one of the great villians… GARY OLDMAN, and I’m there.

I am not ashamed to admit my insistence upon seeing this movie is based purely on the buzz about Heath Ledger’s performance and my morbid curiosity of seeing him more or less beyond the grave. I am 100% positive a great many of the pre-sold tickets have been bought by others with the same feelings, whether they’ll admit it or not.

  38. Sure, this being the final Heath Ledger film is part of the hype. But, I think this film will rise beyond just another “comic book movie.” This will be considered a great film, regardless of its connection to a comics/graphic novel character. The reason for this has already been mentioned, but consider the talent involved with this film. Joel Schumacher nearly hacked this character and franchise to death. Christopher Nolan restored some depth that was established in the original Burton/Keaton version. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Frank Miller must have truly been pained. Thank God he put his remarkable talent to work in revisioning Batman for our world today.

I think the attention to a solid STORY, as well as casting REAL actors instead of “personalities/characters” (see Batman & Robin, on my list as one of the WORST films in decades) is key to the success of this film and any film.

I don’t think it’s a big secret to get people to the theaters. Tell a good, believable story that works within the realm of its own well-established world, respect the audience, respect the characters, and make the story the focus of the film, not the product tie-ins and Happy Meal toys.

I CAN wait to see this film, notably well after opening weekend. In my town, people dressed up as Indiana Jones for Crystal Skull. I don’t need to see homemade bat costumes or lame Joker makeup. For that fix, I’ll catch the next Rocky Horror midnight show.

I think this will be a rare film that lives up to the hype. And, studios will hopefully take note. Trust the directors and writers they hire, not the audience exit polls. TELL A GOOD STORY! LEARN FROM LORD OF THE RINGS AND EVEN HARRY POTTER. Batman and Superman deserved better, and thankfully, it looks like they’re getting better. Not surprisingly, it’s directors from the world of Independents who are breathing life, respect, and excitement back into what should be great franchises.

Heath Ledger was a good actor and I’m somewhat of a Batman fan, but knowing this film was his last completed effort and that it taxed his health to the limits, puts a damper on my enthusiasm for the movie. 45. Hey, me, I’m glad people like to attend a movie where the good guy fights evil instead of facilitating or justifying it. No-nonsense, bitter, disciplined - Christian Bale plays an unbeatable Batman. It is his acting ability that re-invigorates the movie industry with regards to the ‘new’ crop of ‘talent’ … he actually has ability in an industry where his looks alone could propel him to top billing. Congratulations, Christian! And thanks for playing a good guy in a way that makes people want to be good for a change (too many ‘it’s cool to be a bad guy’ movies out there).
Fans of his acting ability should check out Equilibrium or American Psycho, of course he’s made many other movies beginning with (to my recollection) Empire of the Sun.

  53. back when the trailers first started coming out, there was hype. however, there wasn’t as much hype. if you really think heath’s death had nothing to do with it, you’re simply naive.

i saw this movie at midnight (probably like the rest of you) and i think it was good. maybe great. but one of the best movies of all time? more than likely not. heath did do a great job, but what about the rest of them? i think christian’s performance was good too and so was eckhart’s, freeman’s, and caine’s. however, the rest of the acting was pretty mediocre. a perfect movie would have a perfect cast.

next would be the story. where to begin? i have no idea because there wasn’t much of a story. it just jumps from place to place with no sense of direction really.

so without a perfect cast and relatively no story, what movie could go down as the greatest movie of all time?

i will say that it was well worth the $8.50 and is definitely one of the top 3 comicbook stories of all time, but i don’t think it’s the greatest movie of all time.

  60. Lol.
I saw the movie and I thought it was a blast. I agree alex that the movie was good, great, but it wasn’t deeper than pure spectacle, if that makes sense.

The judgemental people in here are incredibly amusing, who feel like its their duty to step in and condemn America for the naturally higher curiosity that surrounds a movie under such unusual circumstances.

And would the political junkies who can only view the world through the lenses of their respective political parties let up? Recession or not, this movie is worth 15 bucks. The potential slowing economy just means that people will see fewer movies, not no movies. In fact, it just might highlight the kind of movies that people are willing to see. i.e., make money for those that only see the bottom line.

I really like this movie, and I hope that it breaks the records Spiderman 3 set, because I have no desire for an adaptation that turned a smart-ass into a castrated wuss wallowing in self-pity to beat out an adaptation that improved upon the theme or moral wrestlings that we all deal with.

And I like Batman, but the Riddler from the Animated Adventure’s always been my favoritye Villian. Forget Jim Carrey.

He(Nolan) Is A Hollywood Genius,Exactly right where he belongs and (2008) Batman the dark Knight will max all that has been spoken about batman from the birth Of its comic book life to The big screen.
Heath Ledgers Passing was A Tragic event (Heath ledger) Himself Is a superb actor But He is among little to what captures the public to the release of this film.
It Is not his Death BUT the life of batman shown in a reality based Flick That Has made the hype to an all time high.
Nolan , The Crew,The cast(Heath ledger,Morgan freeman and The Star Actor Himself Christian Bale Have perplexed this All time historical film Into a movie that Doesnt Dwindle down but Meet the expectations by exceeding them.
No Better Role of batman could be played by anyone but that of (bale) The rugged yet Rich Boy in gotham Who wears a costume and fights crime?
Anyone else could not transform this from Dream world to Today real.
Christian Bale Made his Touch on batman to be beyond excellent. Seeing him once again play the part……will surely ruin my eyes and change the way I see superheros to date.
There couldnt be any better actors to play the role than the ones who are in this film.
Life, death…It doesnt take away whats now
and Now Is that Heath ledgers death doesnt make him any better or anyless than an actor nor make this movie any better or any less as good.
Heath Is amazing…Just in comparison as christian bale (The BATMAN of all batmen!) and Freeman (Who Blows me away by the little bit of a sentence)
Has turned A Lifetime long Era to a Lifetime Long Memorabilia.

You can not tell me that’s what’s going on. That’s how Hollywood works and anyone who denies that obviously doesn’t pay attention. Why else would they consider him for an Oscar before the movie was even out? I don’t even know who else is in this movie cause he’s all the media talks about. Let’s praise a drug addict and the role that contributed to it. I’d rather hear about the stunt driver who was killed filming the movie. 75. The people saying that Heath Ledger was a drug addict obviously pay no attention to the facts to how he died and opinion’s should be taken with a grain of salt.

The man died from a bad mix of medications gotten over-the-counter to fight his cold and the prescription sleep meds he started taking after making the Dark Knight because he uses method acting and he found something in himself that was the Joker and it disturbed him so much that he couldn’t sleep.

Perhaps his death caused some people to sit up and take notice, but any movie that generates publicity to the point of the News stations will do that. However, his death didn’t make me or anyone I know decide to go the movie on opening night. Saying we went because its ‘Batman’ cheapens it. WHY its simply ‘Batman’ is because the Batman is such a great representation of humanity and the psychology that is in all of us. You connect with him and his villains more than any other superhero because of such realism.

THAT is why we went to the movie.

  76. If I were Ledger, I would be proud of this final role and proud that everyone was seeing it just because of my death. Yes, death is good for business. But considering how well he did… he deserves this hype.

BTW, I would have seen the movie even if Ledger wasn’t in it.

  77. I saw a small trailer of Dark Knight on the internet, and wasn’t overly impressed; it seemed like another film that’s got a lot of things constantly exploding on the screen, which is what sells, plus Heath’s joker really didn’ seem that scary to me. However, at some point, I may go see this film out of curiosity.

  78. well i am very happy for DC & Warners. I loved Iron Man and all the other great Marvel movies but DC does make VERY great ones when they finally flex their muscles and let the proven talent enjoy some creative freedom.

Spidy 3 may have all the dough for superhero movies, but DC can be very proud of what it has done with TDK. This was much more than a superhero movie. Iron Man may have been a long shot and the great surprise hit of the summer, but TDK is a classic/modern combo of great movie making.

…and Hell Boy2 was great as well. Hopefully it has a great remainder of the summer run. I still think it is the best comic to screen adaption, with director being given creative freedoms, and without be overly literal with the imagery ala Sin City.

I intend to see TDK at least two more times with friends and family members who have asked me if i want to go again. Hellboy will be one more time as well.

…and right aound the corner comes Mummy 3. damn…

What a great Summer of 08 movie season this has been. come to think about it, even the “bad” movies are a notch above the rest.

  79. I agree with Bruno (see below)–”The Dark Knight” would still be dominating if Ledger were still with us. I was completely gung-ho after seeing the trailer and this was way before Ledger died. When Ledger died I felt bad that he wouldn’t be at the ‘party’. Plus, “The Dark Knight” is going to do way better than “Spiderman 3″. I saw “The Dark Knight” Friday morning at an IMAX theatre. I just tried to see it again this afternoon (Saturday) in a ‘regular’ theater (Bay Street in Emeryville (Oakland)). I say, “tried” because there were two motorcycle cops blocking the entrance to the parking garage. This is the same theatre that I saw “Spiderman 3″ in last year the day after it came out, and I had no trouble getting into the parking garage then.

  80. This is not an original observation, but why has the movie industry moved so slowly to capitalizing on the potential revenues to be had by using already working means of distribution. The Dark Knight could have been the fist film with a billion dollar opening weekend. Combine $10 dollar theater tickets with cable\satellite pay-per-view, internet downloads and DVD sales and start adding it up.

  82. This was the best Batman movie ever! But has anyone noticed something about the movie?
It seems to almost be an alagory of post 911 America.
Maybe I’m reading too much into it; but what does anyone else think.
And yes Heath was the best Joker ever.

  83. Batman series so far is the best of the comic book movies. Spidey is great but this movie clearly shows the hype was worth the wait. Ledger was great. Whether his death spurred the hype? Sure, but his performance speaks for itself. Will miss you, Heath.

    Comment by CK — July 19, 2008 @ 8:47 pm

  84. Saw TDK at 10:30 this morning. Thought “Begins” was better. TDK needs more Batman and less Joker as far as I am concerned. I have waited three years for this film so Ledger’s demise had nothing to do with my motivations to see the film. I have followed Batman from the comics in the middle ’60’s so casting of villains obviously meant little to me.

I was disappointed that Batman is getting second billing and that with the millions spent on the film that Two Face didn’t look more realistic. What an obviously inferior job on makeup!

Happy to see the millions being spent so that it encourages Batman 3. Bale is wonderful in his dual role and for my money it was the writing that draws the people into the theater as there is a story arc and character development. Great ensemble cast with the weakest link being Gyllanhall. Having time to think about the new film, I think the origin story of Batman Begins is much better and truer to the comic book original. Fully realized realistic story based on fantasy. Quite an accomplishment, Mr. Nolan, cast and crew. Both films stand out as complete entertainment. Production values, marketing, acting, writing- it is all there in the new Batman that Nolan has given us.

  88. I was not impressed with this Batman. The sound made it very hard to understand lines; and the story really didn’t do it for me.

  89. Just to add to my earlier comments:

the acting in this movie is so far above evey movie this year it is scary. Its as if this movie swooped down on a real city and real people.

Ledger was phenomenal. at no time to you ever see Heath. He is competely into the character of the Joker. And yet Bale is also acting at a very high level. When both of them meet it is always the most electricfying scenes. Also, everybidy else including the actor playing 2-Face, were excellent.

The look, pacing, and plot of the movie is flawless. From the opening scene this movie NEVER lets down…and its nt because it is all action. It is because the director and ALL the actors & actressses, NEVER let up in their hi-quality performances. You feel as if everytime they open their mouths, it is sincere and for real.

I have read it is a long shot for this film or for Heath to get an oscar and thats a damn shame. This movie plays out as alot moore than a super hero movie. It shows a very ingenious take on the world we live in, yet not at the sacrifice of the Batman and his cast of characters.

    saw it twice already…

    cheers & enjoy.

  90. I’m so sick to death of people saying and implying that the hype is based on his death. You all seem to have extremely short term memories. The hype and hysteria over his performance started LONG before his death. He died in January and I remember the buzz starting last summer, so enough of the “HEATH’S DEATH IS THE ONLY REASON IT’S POPULAR” bullshit.

It was an astonishing film and is absolutely Oscar worthy. Hopefully TDK will be nominated for best picture and Heath Ledger for best supporting actor.

  91. Ledger was BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT!!! The late Ledger stands toe to toe with Brandow, Dean, and Welles (Citizen Kane) as a character actor. His choices (vocally and physically) were out of this world. Treat yourself, and WATCH THIS MOVIE!

  93. This film was on the horizon as being the Best Batman Film EVER - well before Ledger’s OD. Everything Christian Bale touches these days is brilliant. Amazing continuity, scripting, depth, etc.

Without Christian Bale, Ledgers Joker would have been mediocre, with Christian Bale, Ledgers Joker was brilliant.

Perhaps now RIAA and the MPAA will realize that if they put out quality product people will come out in hoards and they are willing to spend their money, if they put out the same old crap then they can sue 13 year olds and blame the internet for their incompetence.

  94. Beating a weekend by $4 million is not “close.” That said, I predicted, and was hoping for, a $160 million open. The fastest to $200 million record is definitely going down and even if it closes next weekend with a 65% drop it’ll still be knocking on $300 million after a week and a half. Unbelievable.

  98. man you guys that are saying its only because he died..your DEAD WRONG. maybe that applies TO YOU BECAUSE you only HEARD IT after. but there was MANY BUT MANY PEOPLE who were ALREADY going crazy for this movie. and poeple ALREADY were giving rave reviews and talking about how well he acted in the movie.
yes his death gave a buzz BUT NOT INTENTIONALLY. it only gave up maybe a few more bucks but not the TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF money. its not like SUPER MEGA ACTOR died..he wasn’t even that POPULAR TO begin with. i highly DOUBT that a person goes to see the movie because an actor that THEY DIDN’T EVEN know who died is in it. PLEASE. if you want to see it you want to see it! and it was freaking amazing and his performance was OFF THE CHAIN.

oh and to those saying ‘ TLAKING ABOUT SOME DRUG USER. wth does his drug use have to do with anything? ok yeah alot of OTHER people die but we can not POSSIBLY know all those THOUSADNS PEOPLE i mean theres is not even THOSUANDS OF SUPER WELL KNOWN actors to beging with. u swear like this was intetnional or he is an ass or some shit. he died of an overdose cuz he couldn’t sleep..like he said he was tried after filming and his mind kept running about his role.
we pay attention to his death MORE becuase people ALREADY WHERE HIGHLY ANTICIPATing the movie to being with..and an actor who was in it died..who was already told to be great…and died “partly” cuz of his role..

not because HE WAS A DRUG ADDCIT. please your so close minded.

and PS. YES I JUST KNOW people are going to starat dumb rumours like HE FAKED HIS DEATH SO IT COULD GET MORE MONEY…or he went away in cult in australia to releave his mind from the jokers sinster chracter like jack warned him. wow i just know it! lmfoa how ridiculous wOULD THAT BE! LMFAO

never the less. I LOVED THE movie i wanna see it again soem scens are so sick and mind you i am a girl..oh and i wanted to see but not super bad. and i was very pleased VERY. THE MOVIE IVE BEEN wanting ot see badly is the mummy three i love those movies! but i dont think it will be as good. but i knwo still pleasing lol

  101. this movie had already generated some big viral buzz before ledger’s untimely death. i for one was extremely psyched to see it ever since first seeing a picture of heath’s grungy take on the joker. sure his death increased buzz, that’s expected. but that is certainly not the only reason this movie is shattering records

  102. I’m sure it’s a great film, but it’s really depressing seeing the late Heath Ledger as a Joker bobbel-head. It’s just so morbid.

I’m all about the comics anyway. Remember those?

  103. Saw the movie today and it was amazing! I remember when I saw the preview last summer and saw how demented Joker looked, I knew I had to see it. At first I was surprised that Ledger played Joker, he didnt seem the type and to be honest I never was into his other movies but Ledger out did himself and set the standard for acting. Let’s not forget the other actor involved, Bale is praticaly the face of Batman and Morgan Freeman ,who’s my favorite actor, as always delivered a stunning performance. (Katie Holms, you’re an idiot!)

  107. Saw the movie last night and don’t think this is something kids should see. I blieve the hollywood moguls are making evil & death a high priority; they’re mindsets are all skewed. This was not a “fun” movie. Too complicated, to dark, to evil, to much of any sort of extream. Disapointed for sure.

  108. I enjoyed the Dark Knight, went to see the midnight showing which they had 9 screens showing it with every one of them sold out. Thankfully I bought the tickets before hand. Heath’s performance as the Joker was amazing, best ever. My only negative comment I have is Bale’s phony batman voice which was very raspy and hard to understand at times.

  109. I dont know what the big deal was. I saw this movie and thought it was just ok. I mean it wasnt bad, but i dont see what all the hype was about. it was NOWHERE near as good as everyone is making it out to be.

And Heath Ledger? I never even heard of this guy up until a couple of weeks ago. But that could be because I’m stuck in the 80’s with Tom Hanks, Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray.

    Comment by Steve — July 21, 2008 @ 7:32 am

  110. Ledger played a good psychopath — remove the makeup and he’s the kind of psychopath we’ve seen in hundreds of other movies. Jack Nicholson is still, by far, the best Joker. Found “The Dark Knight” itself to be a chaotic, noisy, headache-inducing bore. They can make movies a lot louder today, but certainly not better.

    Comment by anonymous — July 21, 2008 @ 7:48 am

  111. This is the most elaborate hoax ever attempted. There is absolutely no way this happened this weekend. Everyone knows we are in a deep recession. Everyone’s lost their jobs. No one can afford to feed their children or pay for health care or fill their gas tanks or afford the AT&T data service charge on their millions of brand new Iphones. Because of Bush and Cheney, no way can Americans afford to drop $155 mil in one weekend on a silly movie. Right?

  112. I saw this movie and am still reviewing so many scenes in my head. It may have been a long movie, yet I sat there wanting more when it ended. From the first scene you were held captive, not one moment dragged. The death of Heath Ledger is unfortunate, however, it didn’t make any difference with how you viewed the movie. For me it was sad his life was over before he saw himself as an Oscar contender in so many movie goers eyes. I’ve never seen another Batman movie. That does not seem to make a difference to me. Ledger hypnotised you into his roll as his first scene started and you stayed mesmorixed by him until the credits rolled! Everyone in the movie gave a 200% performance. Who cannot resist the dry humor of Michael Cane! Don’t miss this movie.
